Work at Home
I do not set homework for Year 1, but each week I will make a few suggestions for things you could do if you have time. They have worked hard all week and do need a weekend - but reading to and with your child is key, so please just do that! Otherwise you could………
-
Please ensure that your child is reading at home - school reading books, along with anything from home will be great, and ebooks from Oxford Owl. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/
-
We expect children to read a minimum of three times a week to an adult at home. Each time they read please make sure you sign their reading record so that your child gets a sticker!
-
Handwriting - if you have time you can practice handwriting - letters MUST start from the line.
-
Phonics work - practice the key sounds on the attached sheets.
-
Common Exception word list - these are the words that Yr1 must be able to read, spell and use independently by the END of the year. Children must also be able to read and write the days of the week. These words are key to successful and fluent reading and writing. please practice reading and writing these words with your child at home.
-
Maths - each week on the weekly update I will tell you what we have been learning in Maths that week so that you can focus on that at home too. Most important, at this stage, is for the children to be able to count to 10, 20 and then 100 confidently and to be able to write the numbers correctly. Also to learn the number bonds to 10. Keep an eye out for our weekly focus on the News page.
Thank-you very much for your support - any questions, please just ask.

If your child is self isolating this week, here is their work for the week ahead….
Maths - This week we will continue with our work on the Part Part Whole model - a diagram to help the children see how a number(the whole) can be broken up into two separate groups (the parts). The work this week also introduces the addition sign in a way that shows the children that addition can be done in any order. We will also move on to talk about Number Bonds to 10 and basic addition. We also use a ten frame for this work - the children know what these are - just a grid with 5 squares along the top and 5 along the bottom.
If you could make a part part whole diagram at home to support the children’s learning, that would be great. Just drawn on a piece of paper and buttons will do as counters, or pieces of pasta! The videos will support the children’s learning.
Follow this link to take you to some videos that will help the children with their Maths work this week.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/week-6-number-addition-subtraction/
(You need the last two video for Mon/Tues)
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/week-7-number-addition-subtraction/
(You will need the first three videos for Wed/Thurs/Fri)
For English, I have added an online unit based on listening to a story and writing about it - I have added this site because it has videos of the story and clear instructions as to what to do. Thought it would be straightforward for you all. Please follow the link below and then click on the MONEYS AND HATS: PROBLEMS box - this will take you to a ten lesson plan - this will see you through two weeks of home learning. Enjoy!! For tjose of you who were seil isolating last week, just continue with this unit as there is enough here for two weeks - those just starting, start at the beginning!
https://classroom.thenational.academy/subjects-by-year/year-1/subjects/english
Please take a look at Education City - password in the front of the children’s reading records and I ensure that your child ha work that they can access on this site.
https://www.educationcity.com/
There are two phonic games - I will add some more activities to the children’s accounts then they have a few other things to keep them going! Look in the Homework section.
Also, use homework page on class blog for Phase 3 phonics, handwriting and Oxford Owl site. http://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework
Phonics Focus for this week - ‘air’ that’s not fair and ‘ure’ sure it’s pure. BBC Bitesize is super for Phonics support and KS1 activities in general. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/z3g4d2p
Please DO NOT bring in the children’s work to school - but do post pictures into the PORTFOLIO section of Class Dojo.
Try to do three hours of school work - 30 minutes of Phonics and Reading, 45 minutes of English and handwriting practice, 45 minutes of Maths including Mental Maths (we are working on doubling and halving within 10, adding one more or one less to a number under 30 in class) and an hour of Topic based work in the afternoon. Just try your best - that is all I ask - I know it is very hard when you are working at home too.
Monday - RE we are looking at the Annuication and why Mary is such a special lady to us. We will talk about Our school being named after Mary and think about why Jesus chose Mary. The activity is linked to the Hail Mary prayer, which we have been learning in school.
Tuesday - we are continuing in the afternoon with our Science topic all about Animals - today we will work in partners to group our animal photos as to whether they are omnivores, carnivores or herbivores.
Wednesday - focus on the capital cities of the countries that make up the UK and the seas that surround our coast line. We will start today by examining our atlas and locating the capital cities of the countries that make up the UK. We will add these to our map, along with the Seas that surround the UK.
Thursday - we will be continuing with our sewing topic. Mrs Veasey will start taking the children in small groups to make their sea creature. The rest of us will do a sea creature themed art activity in class. These look fun for our first week!! Have a go and see what you can create!
Friday - don’t forget we finish school at 1.15pm on a Friday, so no afternoon activity!
Many thanks - please post all work through ClassDojo in the Portfolio section.

Here are just a few things for the children to be getting on with this week whilst they are off school.
I have added two days of Maths activities based on ordinal numbers and using a number line, which we have been doing in school and then two days of new content based on the part part whole model which we have not yet covered in class, but will be doing this week. This is all about splitting up numbers so a 5 can be 4+1 or 2+3 or 5+0.
Follow this link to take you to some videos that will help the children with their Maths work this week.

I will add to this blog throughout the week, but I thought this would be enough to get you through today! Please DO NOT bring in the children’s work to school - but do post pictures into the PORTFOLIO section of Class Dojo.

Just try your best - that is all I ask - I know it is very hard when you are working at home too.
Monday - RE we are looking at how God keeps his promises. In class we will be making a rainbow to show this - a little like this one! If you have some coloured paper at home, then you could have a go too. See picture at the bottom of the blog.
Tuesday - we are continuing in the afternoon with our Science topic all about Humans - today concentrating on ourselves. I have added a little measuring investigation. At this stage Yr1 use other objects to help them measure - like in the example - so don’t worry if you don’t have a tape measure or ruler at home! Record your results and send them in. Don’’t worry if you can’t print out the sheets sent - just make your own on a piece of paper.
Wednesday - Local Study. This week we are going to focus on Physical and Humans features of Blackpool and our landmarks - such as the tower. Physical features are the elements that are there in nature, like trees, bushes and the human features are the man-made aspects of the land like roads, house and street lamps. Please could the children draw and colour a little picture in the right box and then label it.
Thursday - our afternoon will be spent free painting, using all of the skills we have learnt this half term, like mixing secondary colours, how to paint circles and lines, using different sizes of brush to create our own master piece of our own creation. So have a go at home, paint me a lovely picture and I look forward to seeing them through Class Dojo!
Many thanks

In Year One we are having a reading challenge for the Summer term, starting next Monday 16th April. We will use the reading logs to see if the children have read atleast 3 times in the week. There will be prizes for the children who have completed the challenge at the end of the term - Good luck!
Book changes will continue as normal:
On Mondays guided reading books and basket books will be changed.
On Thursdays just basket books will be changed.

Thank-you so much to those parents are ensuring that their children are reading AT LEAST three times a week. This is our minimum expectation - I would love if it every child was reading every night. PLEASE ENSURE YOU SIGN YOUR CHILD'S READING RECORD WHEN THEY READ TO YOU - SOME OF THE CHILDREN ARE INSISTANT THAT THEY HAVE READ, BUT WE ONLY KNOW THAT IF YOU SIGN THEIR RECORDS. THANK-YOU SO MUCH.
As we all know, those children who are avid readers, are also those children who have a wealth of ideas and language at their fingers tips when it comes to their own writing. It is our aim that all children should develop a life-long love of reading; reading for reading's sake and also reading for learning.
With this in mind, all of Our Lady's will start the 100 million minutes reading challenge tomorrow! In Key Stage 1 we are asking each child to read EVERY NIGHT in the week starting 1st March through to 9th March - reading records will be checked each day in school by either me or Mrs Veasey and those children who have read to an adult at home AND have had their reading record signed will be given a sticker for that day. They will then be given a 'tick' on the class reading sheet and allocated an amount of time for reading at home (you can write in how much time they have spent reading if you like.) At the end of the week these sheets will be collected and across each Key Stage prizes will be allocated - see letter that came home with your child yesterday for more details.
KEY POINTS - Challenge is set to see if your child can read at home every night for a week!
Reading Records MUST be signed by an adult - no time, sticker or time allocated if not signed. Records must also be signed daily - not just at the end of the week!
Prizes given out at the end of the week to class who reads the most across the Key Stage and child who reads the most too!
Reading is fun! Spread the Word!

Aswell as learning logs, which are sent home every two weeks for children to complete, we have an expectation at Our Lady's that children will read with an adult (particularly in KS1) atleast 3 times a week - 3 times being the minimum amount. It is really important to read as much as possible as reading allows the children to access all areas of the curriculum.
Please write in the reading diaries when you have read and you may add a comment. Reading diaries should be left in school bags each day so they may be accessed in school when required.
