Our learning this week…

In English the children have been working well to edit and improve their own mythical narratives based on our class text ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. We have been particularly focusing on how we might use fronted adverbials, prepositions and a range of expanded noun phrases to develop our use of description of characters and setting.

In Maths we have been exploring some ways we can use part whole models to calculate division calculations of 2-digit numbers, using our knowledge of multiples to make the most efficient choices. We have also been learning how to work our remainders when dividing.

In RE this week we have continued to explore our understanding of the ways in which Jesus told parables to help people to understand the Good News. We focused in particular on the the parable of the Unforgiving Servant. The children were able to reflect on the key message of forgiveness and they were encouraged to make links to other teachings of Jesus relating to this theme.

The children will be continuing to learn their spellings and tables given out on Tuesday 20th February 2024, this needs to be returned by Monday 26th February 2024.

The children have all come home with their login for TTRS, please can you support your child to access this on a regular basis.

In Maths we have begun our new topic on using written methods to calculate longer multiplication and division. This week we have particularly focused on multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number., comparing two different methods to work efficiently.

In RE this week we have continued to build our understanding of the ways in which Jesus told parables to help people to understand the Good News. We focused in particular on the the parable of the Unforgiving Servant. The children enjoyed making links between the story and the heavenly message for Christians.

In Maths we have been growing our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 7, 9, 11 and 12. We have been investigating a variety of methods and strategies to work out answers to a range of word problems.

In RE this week we have thought about the ways in which Jesus told parables to help people to understand the Good News. We focused in particular on the the parable of the Sower. The children enjoyed making links between the story and the heavenly message for Christians.

In Maths we have been growing our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100, with numbers up to 1000. The children have been working hard to use place value grids to represent the numbers and to show how we can make numbers 10 times bigger or 10 times smaller.

In RE this week we have thought about ‘The Presentation of Jesus’ at the temple, considering in detail the trust and faith that Simeon showed in God. The children were then able to make links with Christian beliefs about showing trust and faith in God, and how we might show this within our own lives’.

In Maths we have been growing our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100, with numbers up to 1000. The children have been working hard to use place value grids to represent the numbers and to show how we can make numbers 10 times bigger or 10 times smaller.

In RE this week we have been developing our understanding of the important role that Joseph had within the events of the Nativity. We have explored how Christians might be inspired by the trust that Joseph showed in God and how we might also show this trust in our own lives and towards others.

In English the children have been sharing, editing and writing their final drafts of their own newspaper reports based on our class text ‘The Whale’. We especially focused on the use of past tense, inverted commas and correct punctuation to improve our final copies.

In Maths we have been developing our understanding of problem solving using bar models and the part whole models to support our understanding. The children have worked hard this week to explore a range of mathematical vocabulary relating to addition and subtraction.

In RE the children have been continuing to focus on how Christians try to show their trust in God with reference to the trust that Mary showed at the annunciation.

Lest We Forget...

Every year the country comes together for Remembrance Sunday.

A period of silence is held at 11am to remember the people who have died in wars around the world.

Remembrance Day - is on Saturday this year - and marks the actual day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918.

Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year, and usually falls on the second Sunday in November.

The royal family will lay wreaths at the Cenotaph and the UK will have a moment of silence at 11 o'clock on that day as part of the commemorations.

In School, we have been commemorating Remembrance Day with class prayer and liturgy. We also came together in the school hall to hold a minutes silence, we were led in reflection by Year 6.

‘So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour. (Matthew 25: 13)

Feast of All Saints and School 70th Anniversary

Whole School Mass 1st November 2023

On Wednesday 1st November we attended a whole school parish mass in church at 9.30am. This was a great opportunity to worship and gather within the parish community to celebrate the feast of All Saints Day and also to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of our school . Parents, parishioners and past pupils were warmly welcomed to join us in the School Hall after mass for some refreshments. Well done to our Year 4 representatives for serving refreshments at this celebration!

Feast of All Saints Whole School Mass 1st November 2023

On Wednesday 1st November we will be attending a whole school parish mass in church at 9.30am. This will be a great opportunity to worship and gather within the parish community to celebrate the feast of All Saints Day . Parents and carers are warmly welcomed to join us in church and after in the School Hall for some refreshments.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been planning and writing their own descriptions of a scene from our class text ‘The Whale’. We were thinking carefully about our use of correct sentence punctuation, expanded noun phrases and using vocabulary to create effect for the reader.

In Maths we have been developing our understanding of adding and subtracting two 4-digit numbers using the column method. We have been exchanging within the ones, tens and hundreds columns and applying this knowledge to a range of word problems.

In RE the children have been continuing to work hard to grow their knowledge of a range of Bible stories. This week we have been researching the stories of Abraham and Moses. Considering ways in which they showed their strong faith and trust in God.

In Science, we have been exploring endangered species. The children used computers to complete research, finding out about reasons why some animals habitats are being harmed and ways in which they are being helped.

Wednesday Word

Year 4 Class Mass Thursday 12th October 2023

On Thursday Year 4 will be attending the parish mass in church at 9.30am. This will be a great opportunity to worship and gather within the parish community. Parents and carers are warmly welcomed to join us in church.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have been exploring a variety of story extracts to find examples of prepositions, expanded noun phrases and short sentences used for effect. The children were encouraged to explain how these word choices added to the overall effect of the writing for the reader.

In Maths we have been applying our knowledge of place value in numbers up to 10000. We have been rounding numbers to the nearest 1000 and looking for patterns in sequencing of numbers by counting in steps of 25. The children were able to apply their knowledge within a range of word problems.

In RE the children have been working hard to grow their knowledge of a range of Bible stories. This week we have been researching the stories of Abraham and Moses. Considering ways in which they showed their strong faith and trust in God.

In History, we have been continuing to consider what life was like for the Ancient Egyptians. The children created their own timelines, and used computers and a variety of information books to research some of the key events, asking and answering some of their own questions.

Spellings, times tables and homework

The children will be coming home with their spellings and homework on Monday 9th October, this needs to be returned by the following Monday.

The children have all come home with their login for TTRS, please can you support your child to access this on a regular basis.

Wednesday Word

Whole School Mass Tuesday 19th September 2023

On Tuesday Year 4 attended the whole school mass in church at 9.30am. This was a lovely opportunity to gather as a school and parish community to reflect on our return to school and the year ahead. Thank you to the parents and carers who joined us in church.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have continued to explore the story of ‘The Whale’. We have been using illustrations from the story to create our own sentences using a range of prepositions to add more effect.

In Maths we have been partitioning and expanding 4-digit numbers, exploring the value of each digit and representing with base 10 equipment.

In RE the children have been working hard to grow their knowledge of a range of Bible stories. This week we have been researching the first story in the Bible, The creation story.

In History, we have been continuing to consider what life was like for the Ancient Egyptians. The children were encouraged to explain how homes, jobs, beliefs were different than modern day, completing their own research.

Spellings, times tables and homework

The children will be coming home with their spellings and homework on Monday 25th September, this needs to be returned by the following Monday.

This week the children have all come home with their login for TTRS, please can you support your child to access this on a regular basis.

In Maths we have been investigating rounding to the nearest 100, using 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have also started to count in 1000’s, the children were able to complete a range of sequences and patterns, involving subtraction and addition.

In RE the children have been continuing to reflect on the importance of The Bible for Christians and on how the bible is structured. The children were able to discuss a range of example stories from the bible and explain how the messages of these stories support Christians in their eveyday lives’.

Welcome to Year 4!

Welcome back to school and to Year 4! The children have had a fantastic first week in our new classroom, and it has been great catching up on all of their summer holiday news, I am looking forward to another year with the class and once again I would like to pass on my gratitude for all your kind gifts at the end of last term, it was greatly appreciated.

Our learning this week…

In English the children have started to explore the story of ‘The Whale’. We begun by exploring a range of beautiful illustrations from the text and creating some of our own expanded noun phrases.

In Maths we have been learning about place value in numbers up to 1000, the children were able to use base 10 equipment to support their understanding and we have been investigating rounding to the nearest 10, using 2 and 3 digit numbers.

In RE the children began their new topic ‘The Bible’ by reflecting on the importance of The Bible for Christians and on how the bible is structured. The children particularly enjoyed designing their own front covers for a Bible, considering key stories or religious figures they might want to present.

In History, we have started our new topic on the Ancient Egyptians. We began by looking at a range of artefacts and thinking of some questions we could ask to explore further.

Spellings, times tables and homework

The children will be coming home with their spellings and homework on Monday 11th September, this needs to be returned by the following Monday. So the first spellings and times tables tests will be on Monday 18th September.

Year 4’s final class story today proved extremely relevant as we made our goodbyes and they moved forward on their journey through KS2.

The 2022/23 Year 4 cohort have been a delight to teach and will always hold a special in my heart. I truly wish that I could teach them forever! I will never forget the memories that we have made and the lessons that this class have taught me. I could not be prouder of the resilience and confidence they have gained this year.

Good luck on your journey into Year 5! As one chapter ends, so another begins …

Year 4's Week!

Year 4’s Learning this week:

English: Year 4 have written and edited their twisted fairy tale endings this week.

Year 4 have also continued working on their Shakespeare learning for Mrs Ormerod. Year 4 have been exploring The Taming of the Shrew through English and Drama. This week we explored how Kate is treated in the play by Petruchio. This raised the topic of how people should be treated and how it made us feel that women were historically treated as less than men. Year 4 raised some very thoughtful and interesting opinions and questions around this topic.

Maths: Year 4 have been exploring Time this week, practising telling the time as well as their problem solving.

RE: This week, Year 4 have been learning about the different colours, signs and symbols used throughout the Church’s liturgical year and their deeper meaning.

PE: Year 4 have continued taking part in their tag rugby sessions.

Spanish: Year 4 have continued identifying and translating the important objects within their classroom this week.

DT: Year 4 have carried on designing their mindfulness timer and turning this into a prototype.

Computing: Year 4 have continued transferring their website designs onto a virtual platform this week, using teamwork to create their final product with care and pride.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

Year 4 can hardly week there are just two weeks left of the academic year! How time has flown!

Year 4 demonstrated exemplary behaviour this Monday at St Bede’s RE and Retreat Day. During Mass, the mixed group workshops and our singing session, Year 4 displayed great respect and willingness to learn in their new environment for the day. I could not have been more proud!

Year 4’s workshops consisted of social justice, making our own rosary inspired bracelets and reflective chapel activities.

Year 4’s Learning this week:

English: Year 4 have been working hard on analysing their example texts for their twisted fairy tales topic this week and have been thinking about writing from the perspective of one of their chosen fairy tale characters.

Maths: Year 4 have continued with decimals this week, including dividing by 10 and 100.

RE: This week, we have been exploring St Teresa and some of her significant work and the reasons behind it. We studied in detail Mother Teresa’s impressive lifetime achievements as well as gathering vocabulary we believed best described St Teresa.

PE: As well as continuing to participate in the rugby/reading programme, Year 4 have been practising their running and relay skills ready for sports day next Friday!

Spanish: Year 4 have continued identifying and translating the important objects within their classroom this week.

DT: Year 4 have carried on designing their mindfulness timer, focusing on their theme, product design and target audience.

Computing: Year 4 have been transferring their website designs onto a virtual platform this week, using teamwork to create their final product with care and pride.

PSHE: Year 4 have been exploring the topic of bullying this week and its true meaning. Bullying is a strong term that can fall under different categories such as physical, verbal and emotional. Year 4 are now ready to educate others about signs of bullying and take a no tolerance stance against it.

St. Peter and St. Paul

This week, Our Lady’s celebrated the feast of St Peter and St Paul, two important men in Jesus’ adult life. Year 4 considered the fact that both Peter and Paul were two of Jesus’ closest friends and yet they both often made the wrong choice during their time as Jesus’ followers. Peter denied knowing Jesus three times before his crucifixion and Paul, previously Saul, had persecuted followers of Christ.

Therefore, this feast day shows us the power of forgiveness and learning from our mistakes. This also shows us the power of Christ’s love for us, that it will withstand all of the hardships we face.

Year 4 behaved beautifully at Mass, representing the school in a reflective and respectful way.

Year 4’s Learning this week:

English: Year 4 have worked hard continuing to immerse themselves in their class vehicle text The Lost Happy Endings this week and analyse the language, grammar and themes within the text.

Maths: Year 4 have been tackling decimals this week including dividing whole numbers by ten.

RE: Year 4 have been preparing for their St Bede’s RE day on Monday by thinking about Laudato Si’ (caring for our common home). We interpreted this message in different ways thinking about our planet and more specifically our own individual communities and families. We then wrote prayers all around the theme of our families.

Science: This week, the class have been examining and exploring the water cycle and focusing on the different stages such as; evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

PE: Year 4 have spent the last term taking part in a rugby/reading programme which thinks about combining the two polar opposite subjects into one afternoon. Year 4 have shown their enthusiasm for tag rugby, working with Fylde Rugby Club to improve their resilience and team work.

Spanish: Year 4 have been identifying and translating the important objects within their classroom this week.

DT: Year 4 have started to design their mindfulness timer, focusing on their theme, product design and target audience.

Computing: Year 4 have been selecting one of their specialist subjects to create their own simple informative website about, designing a home page as well as separate sub pages of information.

Growing Together!

This week, some of the Year 4’s have been helping with the school’s gardening. The children have been monitoring, watering and harvesting different kinds of plants in the school’s garden and polytunnel. Some of the harvested goods are even going to be used in the school kitchen to contribute towards school dinners.

Year 4’s Learning This Week:

English: Year 4 have started exploring their new vehicle text today of “The Lost Happy Endings”. We have been predicting what we think the story will be about based on the images and words on the front cover before beginning to explore the spooky setting of the story and how that makes the main character feel in the narrative.

Maths: Year 4 have been concentrating on converting improper fractions into mixed numbers this week to aid them in adding and subtracting fractions.

RE: Year 4 have been exploring and describing in detail the different roles within our local Parish community.

Science: This week, the class have been exploring evaporation and condensation before we begin learning about the process of the water cycle.

PE: Year 4 have been playing rounders today to aid them in their throwing and running skills that will be needed during athletics and sports day!

E-Safety: Year 4 have been learning all about what is acceptable and unacceptable about online gaming.

PSHE: Year 4 have been working hard on exploring their emotions in a safe and healthy way this week, recognising that it is ok to share their thoughts and opinions in a positive way.

DT: Year 4 are concentrating on mindfulness and exploring products on the market that help us participate in mindfulness activities.
