'Never give in, never give in, never, never, never. In nothing, great or small, large or petty.' - Winston Churchill

Good afternoon everyone,

Yesterday, Thursday 8th May we stopped to remember the events that took place in Europe 80 years ago. We discussed the impact of WW2 on ordinal people and how lucky we are to live in freedom and safety. We also celebrated as a school, remembering the great joy that swept across the country in 1945. The children all looked lovely in their red, white and blue. We had an extended playtime with KS2 and made model spitfires. We also enjoyed listening to some 1940’s music - and had a bit of dancing too!! What a great day we had!

English - In English we have been creating our settings for our return narrative. We created expanded noun phrases and wrote our own setting descriptions. We also wrote our plan plan for our return narrative.

Maths - In Maths we have explored unit and non-unit fractions. We also looked at how 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent fractions and began to calcuate 3/4 of amounts.

Science - We checked on the progress of our seeds and bulbs and learned about the different ways plants can have their seeds spread.

RE - In RE, we learned about the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples at Pentecost.

Geography - Edie told us all about her time spent in Sydney and showed us some interesting objects from her visit. We also explored some of the key physical features of Australia.

PE - Our Wednesday PE focused on 20th Century playground games and our Friday PE focused upon Athletics practice.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.

Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.

Times Tables

4 times table division facts. Use the times table facts to find related division facts.

Reading

Minibeasts reading comprehension.

Maths

Finding 3/4 worksheet.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Gilheaney and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

May is the month of Mary. The Rosary is a meditative prayer that reflects upon the life, ministry, and death of Jesus and also on His Blessed Mother. As we repeat the familiar prayers, we allow our minds to think about the lives of Jesus and Mary here on earth – a mystery.

Fr Frank came into school on Tuesday to lead an asembly all about the Rosary which has inspired us in our prayer life.

How to pray the Rosary

Throughout May - Children will be undertaking SATS papers (informally). I still need to confirm details on how this is being managed.

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School Run to Rome

We have now completed our laps for Rome in school. Your child should have brought home a slip with their number of laps on it.

We would ask parents to collect sponsorship from friends and family and then pay the total amount through your child’s parentpay account. This event will be added to parentpay account ‘Run to Rome for Cafod’ in order for proceeds to be sent directly to Cafod as we are now a cashless school. Please can all sponsorship forms be returned by Tuesday 22nd April 2025.

As a school, we are always looking for ways to improve children’s engagement with reading and this last half term, more children in Year 5 have been reading regularly as part of our Lent challenge, so during the Summer term, the whole school will be taking part in a reading challenge. Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward. Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
