Good afternoon everyone,
On Thursday 29th May, we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, with the promise of the Holy Spirit that Jesus left his apostles with. In class, we have done lots of work on this important event and have discussed how the disciples were witnesses to the amazing truths about Jesus. We discussed how we too can be witnesses to Jesus and live our lives as a good example to others, in Jesus’ name. We carry on the mission that Jesus gave his apostles - to spread God’s word through Jesus’ actions.
English - In English we wrote our return narratives. I have been blown away by how well written many of these are. Well done, Year 2!
Maths - In Maths we finished our work on fractions by exploring how fractions add up to wholes, having a look at mixed fractions and counting in 1/2s and 1/4s.
Science - We undertook one more investigation to see whether a bean which had sunlight and water could grow without soil and its nutrients. We will monitor and observe the progress of our beans.
RE - In RE, we learned more about the fruits of the Holy Spirit and how we can use them to help ourselves and others. We also learned about how Saul became St Paul through his miraculous conversion.
Geography - In Geography, we learned about Sydney and explained some of the exciting places you might visit as a tourist to the city.
PE - Our Wednesday PE focused on 20th Century playground games and our Friday PE focused upon Athletics practice.
Computing - We had an extra long computing lesson where we used Scratch Jr to create chasing programs with two sprites working at the same time.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Times Tables
I don’t set homework over half term but I have sent home a sheet with 2, 5 and 10 times tables to practice. Please have a go at recalling these times tables as we will have a test on a mixture of these when we return at half term.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Gilheaney and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
May is the month of Mary. The Rosary is a meditative prayer that reflects upon the life, ministry, and death of Jesus and also on His Blessed Mother. As we repeat the familiar prayers, we allow our minds to think about the lives of Jesus and Mary here on earth – a mystery.
On Wednesday, Year 5 supported Year 2 to make their own Rosary bead which we will use to guide our prayer.
Friday 23rd May - Break up for half term holiday at the normal time.
Monday 9th June - Return to school for our final half term in Year 2.
At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Violent Content Online This free guide explores the troubling rise in children’s exposure to violent online content, unpacking the emotional, behavioural and social risks – and how trusted adults can help.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
Extreme Reading Challenge
Continuing with our focus on reading across school, we have a challenge for the children! Reading is one of the most valuable skills we teach children, and it can be a magical adventure when we bring creativity and fun into the mix. One exciting way to encourage pupils to read is through extreme reading challenges – taking books to unusual places or reading in imaginative ways. Where is the most interesting place you have ever read a book? Whether it is up a tree or on top of a mountain, we want your photos! Your challenge is to take a photo of yourself reading somewhere extreme (but safe!) and send it to school. Please send your photos to admin@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk so we can display these in school and on our website. We can't wait to see your pictures! Thank you for your support!
Have a lovely half term break!
Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell, Miss Murray and Mrs Gilheaney
Well done Edie on winning our Golden Ticket reading challenge!
