Good afternoon everyone,
This week, Year 2 have been learning all about the Holy Spirit as we explore Pentecost in our RE lessons. We learned the prayer ‘Come, Holy Spirit’ and began to consider the ways in which the Holy Spirit helps us in our lives and in our relationships with God.
We are trying to welcome the Holy Spirit into our own hearts so we can open our hearts more to God.
English - In English we planned our return narrative stories, based upon Grandad’s Island. We also wrote persuasive letters to convince our Governors to give us air con in class (it has been HOT this week!)
Maths - In Maths we explored more work on 3/4s and also looked at 1/3 and 2/3s. We solved problems involving fractions.
Science - We completed our investigation on the things plants need to grow well. We discovered that, although sunlight is important, water is the most important thing for helping plants to grow.
RE - In RE, we learned about the Holy Spirit and how it helps us. We also learned about St Paul and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Geography - In Geography, we learned about Sydney and explained some of the exciting places you might visit as a tourist to the city.
PE - Our Wednesday PE focused on 20th Century playground games and our Friday PE focused upon Athletics practice.
Computing - We used ScratchJr to program movement.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Spellings
Please practise all of the Year 2 common exception words. We will be working through these in the weeks to come but will have a test on 10 of them next Friday.

Maths

Act of Kindness -
Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Gilheaney and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
May is the month of Mary. The Rosary is a meditative prayer that reflects upon the life, ministry, and death of Jesus and also on His Blessed Mother. As we repeat the familiar prayers, we allow our minds to think about the lives of Jesus and Mary here on earth – a mystery.
Fr Frank came into school on Tuesday to lead an asembly all about the Rosary which has inspired us in our prayer life.
19th - 23rd May - Reading Golden Ticket winners drawn.
Friday 23rd May - Break up for half term holiday at the normal time.
At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Minecraft This free guide explores Minecraft – a gaming favourite for children and adults alike. It highlights the potential risks, including online strangers, in-game bullying and unintended spending.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
Extreme Reading Challenge
Continuing with our focus on reading across school, we have a challenge for the children! Reading is one of the most valuable skills we teach children, and it can be a magical adventure when we bring creativity and fun into the mix. One exciting way to encourage pupils to read is through extreme reading challenges – taking books to unusual places or reading in imaginative ways. Where is the most interesting place you have ever read a book? Whether it is up a tree or on top of a mountain, we want your photos! Your challenge is to take a photo of yourself reading somewhere extreme (but safe!) and send it to school. Please send your photos to admin@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk so we can display these in school and on our website. We can't wait to see your pictures! Thank you for your support!
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell, Miss Murray and Mrs Gilheaney
