Good afternoon everyone,
This week our liturgies have focused on Jesus’ appearance to his disciples. Many had seen him but one who was not there, Thomas, would not believe them until he had seen for himself. When he finally saw Jesus he was awestruck and dropped to his knees. Jesus reminded him that it is easy to believe something you have seen for yourself but blessed are those who believe without seeing.
Year 2 discussed the importance of faith and how our beliefs cannot always be proven. We discussed the need to accept Jesus without being able to gain proof but we also related this to trying to belief our friends when they tell us something. However, we also explained the need to question things that can be proven right or wrong, especially those things we might see or read online.
English - In English we have been creating descriptivie sentences. I was blown away by some of these. We also practised editing and upleveling sentences to make our work better. Finally, we began to plan and write a descriptive piece about the main setting in the stories we will write next week.
Maths - In Maths we did lots of work on finding thirds. We also looked at finding 2/3 of amounts and solving fraction missing number problems. Finally, we began to look at how some fractions can be simplified into a unit fraction.
Science - We checked on the progress of our seeds and bulbs and described the life cycle of a sunflower plant.
RE - In RE, we learned about Jesus’ ascension. We hought about the key parts, the feelings of the disciples and what we wondered about exactly what happened.
Geography - We used 8 compass directions to describe the position of cities in Australia in relation to each other.
PE - Our Wednesday PE focused on 20th Century playground games and our Friday PE focused upon Athletics practice.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Spelling
Adding -ing suffix in two ways.
Firstly, by doubling the last letter of words ending with a vowel and then a single consonant.
Secondly, by dropping the e before adding -ing to words ending in e..
For the spelling sheet please add the -ing to the root word each day.
Reading
VE Day comprehension.
Maths
Arithmetic practice.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Gilheaney and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Thursday 8th May - Our Lady’s will join the rest of the nation in remembering the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. It is fundamental that our children understand what this day means and understand the sacrifices of those that have gone before them.
To mark this day we are asking all of our children to come to school dressed in red, white and blue - please do not feel you have to buy anything special - most of our uniform consists of these colours - we just want to mark the day out as something special and wearing different colours will help the children to understand that.
We will have different activities going on throughout the day in each of the classes to help the children understand the significance of VE Day and your support with this would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Throughout May - Children will be undertaking SATS papers (informally). I still need to confirm details on how this is being managed.
Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School Run to Rome
We have now completed our laps for Rome in school. Your child should have brought home a slip with their number of laps on it.
We would ask parents to collect sponsorship from friends and family and then pay the total amount through your child’s parentpay account. This event will be added to parentpay account ‘Run to Rome for Cafod’ in order for proceeds to be sent directly to Cafod as we are now a cashless school. Please can all sponsorship forms be returned by Tuesday 22nd April 2025.
As a school, we are always looking for ways to improve children’s engagement with reading and this last half term, more children in Year 5 have been reading regularly as part of our Lent challenge, so during the Summer term, the whole school will be taking part in a reading challenge. Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward. Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
