Reading and Golden Tickets
📚Your child will come home with a reading book and reading diary next week. We use an assessment tool called Star Reader to assess the ZPD of your child’s book (this gauges the level of challenge that your child should be reading). Bookmarks and diaries will be checked daily so please encourage your child to read daily if they can and they must have their book and diary in every day. Children should aim to read at least 20 minutes a day and discuss their reading if possible with an adult - this will ensure progress is maintained and the expected standard is met. I’d love to see everyone in class achieving their first completed bookmark by the end of this half term. In Year 4, we will celebrate our reading champions at the end of each half term.
This year, the whole school will continue to do our reading challenge started in the Summer term. Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward. Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
PE
Year 4 PE days are Tuesday and Friday. Please come in full PE kit in line with school uniform policy.
Our award winners:
Golden Award (Learn) - Willow for a fabulous learning attitude in all lessons.
Writing Award - Fearne for a well considered piece of writing about the thoughts, feelings and questions that an author evokes by using specific phrases.
Maths Award - Natan for working in a methodical manner in every maths challenge.
Our learning this week…
In English, the focus of our lessons has been why the author of the text chose specific words and phrases. There have been some wonderful discussions about the choices writers make.
In Maths the focus has continued to be on place value and times tables.
In Science, the children have begun looking at the digestive system.
In Geography, the children have been looking at how wheat is grown and processed in temperate climate zones.
In PE, the children worked in small groups to design and play games to develop their accuracy skills. I was really impressed with the teamwork!
In RE, the children used a conscience alley. They convinced Abraham that he should go to Canaan, despite any negative thoughts..
At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents and Educators Need to Know about conspiracy theories. The latest update to the DfE guidance document, ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ (KCSIE) identifies the safeguarding concerns posed by conspiracy theories. This guide will help you to understand the risks, spot the signs, build children’s resilience and safeguard against the harmful effects of conspiracy theories.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
Homework Please look at the homework page
Year 4 will use online learning TTRS for their homework to practise their times tables this year, alongside reading and spelling homework. I will add more details next week. In the meantime, the children should just focus on their daily reading and using TTRS for their times tables. All homework is on the homework page of the website.
We are thrilled that the children will be able to access IXL and Bedrock to support learning, all children will be shown how to use them in school before it is set as homework.
We hope you all have a great weekend.
