'Reading is a passport to countless adventures.' Mary Pope Osborne

Reading - what a wonderful thing to do! I have been delighted to see so many of Year 1 be awarded their reading certificates this half term to recognise their hard work at home. please keep it up! As we are on half term next week, please feel free to get your child to read their on books over the holidays and hopefully you will have the time to share some stories with your child too. love nothing better than listening to the children telling me all about their favourite books. With World Book Day just around the corner, look out for all the reading themed activities we will be doing in school. Happy Reading!

This week we have been learning…..

English - the children continue to work hard on the phonics in RWI, along with spelling, independent writing and reading. In class we are focusing on our pre-cursive latter formation, correct sentence construction and the spelling of our Common Exception words.

Maths - this week it has been all about 3D shapes! See if you child can name the 3D shapes we have focused on this week and can find objects around your home that are that shape too! (We have looked at spheres, cylinders, cubes, cuboids, triangular prisms, cones and pyramids.

RE - this week we have written about the presentation of the Lord and the children have done a final independent pieces of writing about what takes place at a Baptism. I was VERY impressed with these!

Art - the children finished off their lovely pieces of work based on The Three Little Pigs using their great mark making skills.

Geography - this week we focused on maps and keys and how to give compass directions.

INTERNET SAFETY DAY - Tuesday marked Internet Safety Day - this year’s themes were all about being kind online and how to play games safely online. We had a great chat in class about what the children do online and how to be a kind friend online. We also discussed what to do if there was something that made you feel unhappy online. The children made up some great recipes what ingredients made a good and kind online friend - see pictures at the end of the blog. Please take this opportunity to talk to your child about being safe online.

Many congratulations to this week’s certificate winners…..

Golden Award - Alicia for being a super role model and displaying excellent behaviour for learning

Writing Award - Ava for super independent writing in RE on Baptism

Maths Award - Albie for super 3D shape work this week

Many thanks to all of you who have made your appointment for our Parent Meetings on MONDAY 21st FEBRUARY - the inset day at the beginning o the next half term. If you haven’t made yours yet, please have a look at the slots that are sit available and make a booking. many thanks and I look forward to seeing you all on that day to discuss the progress made by your child.

Unfortunately, we are very much still the grip of the covid pandemic. None of us want to see schools closing and remote learning back in place, so we must ALL play our part to keep one another safe. The new Omicron variant has symptoms that are very similar to the common cold - if your child is showing any cold symptoms PLEASE test them for covid using a lateral flow test and if in any doubt, please go for a PCR. I know the tests are hard to come by, but we must all do what we can to ensure this does not spread through school - we all know how quickly germs spread amongst small children and although they might not be badly affected, those around them may well be. Many of Year 1 have very bad/heavy cold at the moment - have you checked these symptoms?

It may also be worth thinking about testing your child weekly EVEN if they DON’T have symptoms to enable us to ensure this doesn’t spread through our class and school.

Many, many thanks for your continued support on this issue.

If your child is isolating from school due to Covid 19, or any other illness and they are well enough to work, you can find their work on the HOME LEARNING page of the Year 1 section of the website. I have been using Oak Academy units as they all contain a little video and a task for the children to complete that does not require you to print anything - your child just needs a piece of paper and a pencil!! And maybe some colours for the art activities! https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning

Please DO NOT send the work into school with your child on their return, but send photos of it through Class Dojo and add work to your child’s profile. You will each get an invite to this through the email you gave to school when your child was in Reception.

If your child is off school, please inform the office and NOT the Year 1 email or Class Dojo. Many thanks

Any questions or queries either catch me or Mrs Veasey at the gate or email using year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk.
