This week we have celebrated the holy day of Candlemas, or The Presentation of the Lord, on 2nd February. As a class we have discussed this information event in the Church’s calendar as the day when Simeon and Anna ‘saw the salvation’ and the words of the prophets came true. This is a day when candles are blessed in Church and taken home and lit to share the Light of the World within our homes. We have discussed how we can Shine our Light for Jesus and the children will have brought home their own little candle to mark this special day.
This week we have been learning…
English - we have continued with our RWI groups where our focus is on phonics, reading, spelling and independent handwriting. In class we are continuing to focus on our pre-cursive handwriting, sentence construction and the spelling of the common exception words for Year 1.
Maths - this week has been all about comparing calculations using the greater than, less than and equal to signs. We have used addition and subtraction to work out calculations and then compared those answers to see which sign we should use.
RE - this week we have focused on the meanings behind the signs and symbols of Baptism and also reflected on the importance of Candlemas and how we can Shine our Light for Jesus.
Science - this week in our experiment we focused on absorbent and non-absorbent materials, as well as looking at various objects, discussing the materials they are made out of and the properties of those materials.
Topic - this week we looked at our school environment and undertaken a little field work study of our location and looked at creating maps to help people around school.
Art - this week the children complied their Three Little Pigs mark making work to create one main piece of art.
Many congratulations to this week’s certificate winners….
Golden Award - Frazer for being a super star worker in all areas and always trying his best.
Writing Award - Jessie for wonderful independent writing on Baptism
Maths Award - Penny for super independent work on addition and subtraction word problems.
Huge congratulations to Ava and Eddie who have been voted Year 1’s new school council members! Exciting news for them both. They are both looking forward to starting their new job.
Unfortunately, we are very much still the grip of the covid pandemic. None of us want to see schools closing and remote learning back in place, so we must ALL play our part to keep one another safe. The new Omicron variant has symptoms that are very similar to the common cold - if your child is showing any cold symptoms PLEASE test them for covid using a lateral flow test and if in any doubt, please go for a PCR. I know the tests are hard to come by, but we must all do what we can to ensure this does not spread through school - we all know how quickly germs spread amongst small children and although they might not be badly affected, those around them may well be. Many of Year 1 have very bad/heavy cold at the moment - have you checked these symptoms?
It may also be worth thinking about testing your child weekly EVEN if they DON’T have symptoms to enable us to ensure this doesn’t spread through our class and school.
Many, many thanks for your continued support on this issue.
If your child is isolating from school due to Covid 19 and they are well enough to work, you can find their work on the HOME LEARNING page of the Year 1 section of the website. I have been using Oak Academy units as they all contain a little video and a task for the children to complete that does not require you to print anything - your child just needs a piece of paper and a pencil!! And maybe some colours for the art activities! https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning
Please DO NOT send the work into school with your child on their return, but send photos of it through Class Dojo and add work to your child’s profile. You will each get an invite to this through the email you gave to school when your child was in Reception.
If your child is off school, please inform the office and NOT the Year 1 email or Class Dojo. Many thanks
Any questions or queries either catch me or Mrs Veasey at the gate or email using year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk.
Things to note…
Children should have their water bottles each day. Water bottles must be taken home and washed daily. Children can only have plain water in their bottles, not juice or flavoured water.
PE is Monday and Friday
Earrings cannot be worn for PE
Earrings should only be small, plain, gold or silver studs
Children should have long hair tied back for school
School bags should just be the red book bags you were given in Reception
Please keep reading folders in the children’s school bags so that they have them on the right day - many thanks.
