All about the Rosary.....

This week we have been learning all about the power of prayer through the Rosary. Miss Haggery set each of the classes a challenge to say one decade of the Rosary each day - we might not have managed that, but we have been working hard to learn the Our Father, Hail Mary and the Glory Be prayer - so we are nearly there! Next week we will definitely meet this challenge. We have spoken about the meaning of each of the prayers and how we can speak to God through our prayers and that can give us great comfort, particularly in times of need. I hope you will find time over the weekend and the coming week to pray the Rosary with your child. (Each decade starts with the Our Father, followed by ten Hail Mary’s and then ends with the Glory Be.)

We have been impressed by all of the children again this week and how hard they are working - they really are super stars! These are the children we particularly want to celebrate this week….

Golden Award - Patrick for settling into life in Year 1 at Our Lady’s and for producing a wonderful piece of art work this week based on Jasper Johns.

Writing Award - Marth for beautiful pre-cursive handwriting. Your work is a pleasure to read - keep it up!

Maths Award - Laura for super work on greater than, less than and equals to. Great work Laura!

This week we have been working on……

English - our focus has continued to be on stories with Familiar Settings this week reading ‘Mog the Forgetful Cat’ by Judith Kerr. On writing focus is to use capital letters for names and at the beginning on sentences and having finger spaces between our words. We have written about Mog and all the things she does in the story! Our Phonics focus has been ‘oo’ (look at the book) and ‘ar’ (start the car). We continue to work hard on our pre-cursive handwriting.

Maths - we have continued our focus on greater than, less than and equal to, along with ordering numbers and looking for the greatest and the smallest. We have also worked hard on our mental maths skills each day.

RE - this week we have worked hard to learn the prayers so that we can say the Rosary. We have also read and listen to the story of Noah’s Ark so we are ready to write about it next week. We have talked about how this story shows that God was unhappy with the people of his Wonderful World as they were not taking care of all that He has created. https://childrensrosary.org/?page_id=2049&lang=en

Science - this week we started to look at grouping animals including humans. We spoke about the fact that humans are mammals and what it means to be a mammal; along with the other groups of birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects.

Topic - we had a super lesson this week looking at old photographs of our area. The children really enjoyed looking at how the area has changed!

Work at Home - please click on the link and this will take you to the Year 1 Homework Page - this is where Year 1 Work at Home will be posted from now on. http://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework

Other things to mention…

  • Thanks for the family photos - please continue to send these in, the board looks great

  • Please sign your child’s reading record each time they read so that they can collect stickers on their bookmark.

  • Class Dojo - thank-you so much for taking the times to sign up to this. We now have everyone linked in! To celebrate this fact I have set a little task on Dojo for the coming week - take a look and post your pictures! • PE - Monday and Wednesday. NO EARRINGS ON THESE DAYS PLEASE.

  • Don’t forget your child’s water bottle each day - thanks!

  • Please return any outstanding Data Forms to school as soon as you can - many thanks.

  • Please do not send your child into school if they are unwell or showing any signs of Covid 19 - we need to work together to keep each other safe. Many thanks for this.

And finally……..have a lovely weekend…..Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
