What a great week we’ve had! Year 5 have made a great start to this year and it has been lovely to spend time getting to know them a little better. The children are settling in nicely and learning the new routines - we are excited to be working with them this year! We’ve talked a lot about being good role models this year , particularly as the children will have the responsibility of being buddies for our new Reception children. We’ve also talked about how important it is to work hard and that if the children believe in themselves this year, they will achieve great things and any mistakes they make are just proof that they are trying. We’re off to a good start and I know we’re going to have a good year!
Reading and Golden Tickets
📚Your child will have come home with a reading book and reading diary this week. We use an assessment tool called Star Reader to assess the ZPD of your child’s book (this gauges the level of challenge that your child should be reading). Bookmarks and diaries will be checked regularly so please encourage your child to read daily if they can and they must have their book and diary in every day. Children should aim to read at least 20 minutes a day and discuss their reading if possible with an adult - this will ensure progress is maintained and the expected standard is met. I’d love to see everyone in class achieving their first completed bookmark by the end of this half term. In Year 5, we will celebrate our reading champions at the end of each half term.
This year, the whole school will continue to do our reading challenge started in the Summer term. Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward. Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
Swimming
🏊🏼🩲🩱On Tuesday afternoon (9th September), the children will begin their swimming sessions. Please remind your child to bring their costume and towel and if they have longer hair, boys or girls, they should also bring a swimming cap. The children will now be accompanied to the pool by Mrs Hodgkiss and Miss Sanderson.
Full PE kit will need to be worn on Tuesdays (swimming) and Wednesdays will be our outdoor PE session.
Our award winners:

Our learning this week…
In English, the focus of our lessons has been spelling, including those which contain the silent letter b. The children have also completed a reading assessment and have now chosen their new reading book to come home.
In Maths the focus has been on Roman Numerals and place value.
In RE we have begun looking at our new topic on Creation and Covenant. We have been looking at what a covenant is, recognising that God made several throughout history, e.g., with Noah and Abraham.
Homework
Year 5 will use online learning for their homework this year, alongside reading and spelling homework. We will spend a bit of time getting familiar with the websites we will use and then we will start next week. I will add more details next week. In the meantime, the children should just focus on their daily reading and using TTRS for their times tables.
Well done Year 5, you’ve made a great start! We hope you all have a lovely weekend with your families.
