Year 4 have had a very active week this week! Our focus has been building up our resilience and all of year 4 have been working hard to understand and demonstrate the different qualities that make us resilient.

We have been very lucky in our English to be joined by professionals from the Grand Theatre who have been leading a workshop focusing on story led resilience! Year 4 have had lots of fun during the drama games and activities exploring some of their favourite stories. We have also used this workshop as an opportunity to examine the differences between fiction and non fiction stories in class.

In Maths, we have been spending lots of time on practising how to round to the nearest thousand using our place value columns. The class have been rising to real challenges such as rounding using five digit numbers! We have also been spending time on our times tables and working hard on remembering them as quickly as possible.

In RE, the children have been continuing looking at their Bible stories and have been exploring Jonah and the Whale. In class, we have also been keeping mindful of October being the month of the Holy Rosary and discussing how important these different prayers are to Catholics all over the world.

In Science, the children have been doing more work as Eco Warriors, fighting together to try and find small ways in which they can raise awareness to save their planet. We have also joined this thinking with the season of Creation that has just passed. As a class we have been trying to understand how important God’s creations are and the importance of looking after the world that has been given to us.

In Topic, we have had a very exciting week studying mummification in Ancient Egypt. The children got to see a process similar to mummification when we preserved a tomato in class and they cannot wait to see how the experiment develops over the next coming weeks. They also enjoyed hearing all about the gory process the Egyptians would have used thousands of years ago to mummify real people.

Thank you to all the support from home, it has been wonderful continuing getting to know families these last few weeks.

How the weeks have flown! Year 4 have been spending time reflecting on the different ways in which we can live out our Christian values and “love one another” every day.

In English last week, the children continued working on building their own independent dilemma stories and have been growing in confidence every day! We have worked on making our writing exciting using; similes, alliteration and powerful punctuation. We also spent time exploring the five senses and how we can use them to create a vibrant picture in the reader’s mind. Through studying dilemmas, we have also reflected on the difference between right and wrong and how sometimes the “right” decision is not always easy.

In maths, we did our first end of unit check and all of year 4 worked very hard! We have started looking at more than and less then with four digit numbers and adding and subtracting thousands using our Place Value columns and number lines.

In RE, year 4 looked at the story of David and Goliath with Mrs Parker as they continue to explore the Bible and the moral lessons we can learn that we can then live out in our day to day lives.

In Science we have been exploring more about animals including humans by continuing to look at the digestive system and the important organs that keep our body healthy. The children have also spent some of their Science time looking at climate change and how global warming can affect living things on planet Earth as part of CAFOD’s “Eyes of the World” Campaign to raise awareness for climate change.

In Topic, year 4 have successfully started to analyse different Ancient Egyptian pictures to investigate how the Ancient Egyptians would have lived their everyday lives. They also did very well in a game of “Beat the Teacher”, having to create their own Ancient Egyptian quiz to test me!

The children are still enjoying their Singing Spanish lessons just as much as the teachers! We have continued practising our greetings and have started to revise our counting from last year as well.

Mrs Parker also started the first Computing topic last week, teaching year 4 how to start to programme their very own animations!

Year 4 have made a great start to the new year! It has been wonderful getting to know one other and learning together over the last two weeks.

As a class, we have been working on our Golden Rules and how we can practise these in our day to day school life.

Our learning this week …

In English we have been exploring the key features of a dilemma story together and how we can navigate difficult decisions in our own everyday life. We have also been discussing what we think makes a story interesting. Some ideas we had were, using expression, powerful vocabulary and exciting punctuation. We are gradually working towards adding our own fictional chapters into our Lost or Stolen? dilemma story!

In Maths, we have been focusing on our place value columns, specifically up to 4 digit numbers. We have also been investigating number lines that go up to 10,000.

Mrs Parker has enjoyed getting to know the children during RE on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon. The children have been impressing us with their creative and artistic skills to learn about the Bible during these sessions.

In Science, we have been learning how to group animals into different classifications, including the group in which humans belong to; Mammals. We have also been studying our body’s digestive system and all of the different organs we have that work to keep us healthy.

In Topic, we have successfully started learning about Ancient Egypt and we spent time last week exploring modern day Egypt on Google maps and comparing that to an Ancient map of Egypt. The class came up with some excellent similarities and differences!

Our learning this week…

In English, we have been completing our creative writing stories on Hamir’s adventure. We have been drafting and editing our work before completing our final piece. We have also been producing our leaflets linked to the harvesting of our lettuces. We had lots of fun tasting the lettuces this week. Please see Class Dojo for some pictures!

In Maths, we have been exploring time, making conversions between days, weeks, months and years. We have been using our knowledge to solve a range of word problems, developing our reasoning skills.

In RE, we are continuing with our topic ‘Belonging to the Church’. We considered the ‘Liturgical Calendar’ and researched the meanings of the different colours associated with the Church seasons.

This week, the children in Year 4 have made us all very proud with their fantastic efforts throughout the week and especially during our Sports Day today. It was great to see their enthusiasm towards the activities and races, they really were challenging themselves to achieve their best. They were supportive of one another and there was a real sense of teamwork - Well done Year 4!!

THE FEAST OF ST PETER AND ST PAUL

On Tuesday 29th June we will celebrate the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, in school we will be taking part in a ‘virtual’ mass. . We celebrate these two because they were absolutely vital in the development of the early Christian Church. We remember Peter as the one who Jesus chose as leader despite, or maybe because of, the times when he struggled with his faith and found it hard; or times when his feelings were unsure and uncertain. We remember Paul as the one who put into words the ideas about who Jesus was, and who spread his message across the known world. Neither of them were perfect and they struggled with lots of the same things that we struggle with today. This week we will be considering some of these messages in class.

In the gospel this week, we hear about how in the middle of a great storm Jesus calmed the wind and the sea. He tells the disciples to have courage and to have faith. Year 4 will be reflecting on the messages for Christians, of trust, and the belief that God will always be there to help us as we journey through our lives’.

It was great to see all the children in bright colours as a celebration of ‘Rainbow Day’ and thank you for all the kind donations. They have been received gratefully.

Year 4 have started the Gulp Challenge as part of Fit2Go.

Their challenge is to complete 21 days of 'pop' free living by using the drink diary and water bottle sent home today. The diary needs to be completed daily and handed back into school at the end of the 21 days for the 'pop' free days to be counted. This challenge is being run across Blackpool and the class with the highest number of 'pop' free days will be rewarded with a complimentary trip to Blackpool High Ropes at Stanley Park.

So come on, put down the pop and start drinking only milk and water for the next 21 days. We CAN do it!

Our learning this week…

In English, we have been exploring the story ‘ Sugarcane juice’, we have been acting out a part of the story and then writing our own dialogue linked to our understanding of the story and the characters. In our spellings, we have been focusing on suffixes and how this can often change the root word.

In Maths, we have been exploring decimals, and how to convert decimals into fractions, we used number lines and other resources to help us to understand the meaning. In Shape, Space and Measures, we have been learning more about hours, minutes and seconds, solving a range of word problems to consolidate our understanding.

In RE, we are continuing with our topic ‘Belonging to the Church’. We discussed the meaning of belonging to the Christian Family, and we explored the structure of the church community within parishes and dioceses. We then researched the church website of Our Lady’s to find out more about our own parish community.

In music, we enjoyed the opportunity to play the glockenspiel this week. Well done to Year 4, there are some very talented musicians!

In PE, the children practiced the events for our class sports day on 24th June. Even though this event can not be attended by parents/ family, it was great to see how enthusiastic the children were to take part in the activities.

Welcome back to year 4! It’s hard to believe we are now in our final half term, in what has been a very different academic year. The children have all settled back in to class well after the half term break and it has been lovely catching up on all their news.

Our learning this week…

In English, we have been exploring the story ‘ Sugarcane juice’, we have been creating our own detailed descriptions of the setting and editing our work to improve our sentences using a range of adventurous vocabulary.

In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about fractions. We have been converting fractions to decimals and vice versa. In Shape, Space and Measures, we have been exploring the 24 hour clock and comparing times to the 12 hour clock.

In RE, we have started our new topic ‘Belonging to the Church’. We discussed the meaning of belonging and thought about some of the communities we belong to including our families, our class, our school. We produced some posters to show some of the ways we can work together within a community.

In computing, we have been using ‘google sites’ to create our own web pages. This week, the children used their knowledge of the program to produce their own themed page. Some chose dinosaurs, animals, sports etc. Next week we will be presenting our completed pages to the class.

In PE, the children practiced the events for our class sports day on 24th June. Even though this event can not be attended by parents/ family, it was great to see how enthusiastic the children were to take part in the activities.

Our learning this week…

In English, we have been using a range of ‘sensational language’ to improve our writing to make it more interesting to grab the attention of the reader. We had some fantastic ideas!

In Maths, we have been developing our knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions. We have also completed our ‘Times Tables’ competition - well done to everyone for trying so hard.

In History, we have been following up our class trip on Thursday, by researching life in an Anglo-Saxon Village. We have been particularly focusing on foraging, thatching, weaving and the use of armour to defend. The children produced information posters to present their findings and to share their memories of our school trip to Martin Mere Wetland.

Here are some pictures of our class trip, we had a fantastic day, (despite the weather!) and we found out a lot more about what life would have been like in Anglo-Saxon Britain…

Fit 2 Go

The Children will be completing ‘Fit 2 Go’ sessions every Tuesday, starting after half term. A letter has been sent home today. This is a great fitness initiative set up by Blackpool, the program aims to encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle, take part in regular physical activity and to join in with local sports clubs and community programmes which will ultimately improve their overall health and wellbeing. Fit2Go is currently being delivered to every primary school in Blackpool.

Virtual ‘Musician of the Year’ Competition…

A letter has been sent home today regarding a competition that is open to all children in Key Stage 2. To enter, you must present a musical performance in the form of a video. This can be on any instrument of your choice and it does not matter if you don’t have lessons on your instrument in school. This is open to all budding young musicians. Please see the letter sent home for further details on how to enter, the deadline for entries is Thursday 10th June.

Ascension Day

Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples and said: ‘Go into the world. Go everywhere and share the Message of God’s Good News with everyone. On Thursday 13th May, it is Ascension Day when Christians celebrate Jesus being taken up into heaven. Unlike when he died, this is a happy goodbye, because the disciples knew that Jesus would be watching over them from heaven, and that he would send the Holy Spirit to help them. It can’t have been easy for them to say goodbye to Jesus for the second time. However, Jesus needed to ascend to heaven so that the Holy Spirit could come to them. He needed to leave so that He could be closer to us through the Spirit. In class, we have been reflecting on the meaning of The Ascension for Christians in their own lives and on the work of the first disciples to continue spreading the Good News of Jesus.

OUR LEARNING THIS WEEK…

As part of our worship this week, we have been exploring climate change and the ways in which we can help to protect and look after our beautiful world. We shared a CAFOD assembly together, linked to their current campaign of ‘Eyes of the world’. The children had some fantastic ideas and responses for some actions we could take to look after our beautiful world.

In English, we have been exploring some of the characters of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ thinking about their point of view of events within the story and considering the character development within the plot.

In Maths, we have been continuing to explore time, this week we have been learning about ways in which we can work out time intervals.

In computing, we have been focusing on internet safety and the importance of showing respect and kindness online.

In RE, we have been learning about St Stephen, and exploring the ways in which he was an inspiration, as one of the first Christians and as the patron saint of Deacons.

Our Learning this week…

This week we had a fantastic opportunity to link virtually with two other schools to complete an RSC workshop exploring ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The children enjoyed this experience and it really helped to support our understanding. Please have a look at some pictures of the workshop…

In Maths, we have been continuing to explore time, this week we have been learning about converting time between 12 hour and 24 hour clock.

In computing, we have started to use ‘google sites’ to create our own web pages and website. We were able to explore some of the key features of Google sites, including the insert, pages and themes tabs.

In History, we have been exploring the Anglo-Saxon invasion and settlement in Britain. We used drama and role play to bring our understanding of events to life!

In RE, we have been learning about the events of The Ascension and Pentecost. We have been exploring the Gift of the Holy Spirit, and how Christians might show these ‘gifts’ within their own lives’.

Reading Book Challenge….

Just a reminder, we are currently running our ‘Reading Book Challenge’, (from 24th March - 21st May)…

There will be a winner for the amount of words read in this time and also a competition with prizes for first, second and third, the winners will be drawn from a hat for the children who have read five times a week consistently throughout the duration of the challenge. So…. Keep reading and quizzing Year 4!!

Reflection of ‘Good Shepherd Sunday…’

Good Shepherd Sunday is the on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, on which the Gospel passage of the Good Shepherd is shared in Church. The symbolism of Christ as a shepherd comes directly from the gospel of John, in which Christ is leading the faithful and will lay down his life for the sheep, or those who are faithful to him. And while Good Shepherd Sunday is certainly the perfect time to pray for our priests, bishops, and all those who shepherd the Lord’s flock, it is also an opportunity to look at our own lives, and how we can be good shepherds to those in our care.

Homework; Learning By Questions

This week we will be setting some additional homework for the children on ‘Learning By Questions’. The task will be set on Friday afternoon, and will remain live for the rest of the afternoon/evening.

Our Learning this week…

In Maths, we have been continuing to explore how we can change fractions into decimals and vice versa. We have explored the place value of decimals, with a particular focus on tenths. In Shape, Space and Measure, we have been investigating reading an analogue clock to the exact minute.

In English, have continued to read ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’, they have been brainstorming ideas to create their own piece of writing in role as an Anglo-Saxon. In GPS, the children have been investigating the use of adverbs, completing some activities on ‘Learning by Questions’.

In Science, we have been developing our knowledge of Electricity and circuits. The children have been using equipment such as batteries, bulbs and wires to create our own closed circuit - exciting!

Welcome Back!

We hope you all enjoyed the Easter Break, it has been another busy week in school as we start the summer term together as a class…

Our Learning this week…

In Maths, we have been exploring how we can change fractions into decimals and vice versa. We have explored the place value of decimals, with a particular focus on tenths. In Shape, Space and Measure, we have been investigating reading an analogue clock in five minute intervals.

In English, the children have started to read ‘Anglo-Saxon Boy’, they have discussed the use of alliteration, and similes within the text. They were able to use this knowledge to produce some of there own writing to re-tell the story prologue. In GPS, the children have been investigating the use of adverbs, as a technique to add more detail in their own writing.

In Science, we have been developing our knowledge of Electricity and circuits. The children have been investigating how and why a closed circuit will work. We will be developing this further, to use equipment such as batteries, bulbs and wires to create our own - exciting!

In History, the children learnt about Sutton Hoo, investigating the artefacts found in the burial ship, and discussing their own ideas about what this might tell us about whether the person was a soldier, a rich person or clergy. The children were enthusiastic to express their own opinions!

In RE, we have been exploring ‘The Great Commission’ of Jesus, as He asked his disciples to go and spread the message of God’s love to all people. We thought about some ways we could be disciples and show Jesus’ messages in our own lives.

Holy Week and Easter

The week leading up to Easter is known as ‘Holy Week’. It marks the final week of Jesus’ life, from Palm Sunday (when Jesus entered Israel’s capital city, Jerusalem, looking like a king), through Maundy Thursday when Jesus ate his last supper with his disciples, to his arrest, trial and eventual execution on Good Friday. The belief that Jesus died on the cross to cancel out the bad things of the world is one of the most important beliefs in all of Christianity. Equally important are the events of Easter Sunday itself, when Christians celebrate Jesus coming back to life. His resurrection is a sign of his power over death, and symbolic of the new and eternal life He gives to people.

This week in class, we have been sharing in daily reflections to remember the events of Holy Week and to allow ourselves time to consider the deeper messages of the Easter story.

Stations of the Cross

Throughout school, each class has created two pieces of artwork to represent the stations of the cross. The children enjoyed researching and presenting ideas. The finished artwork will be displayed in church and Father Jim will include these in his worship tomorrow on Good Friday. Please see the church website if you would like to view the artwork.

Our Learning this week…

In Maths, we have continued to explore the concept of finding the area of a shape. We have made comparisons using the more than, less than and equal signs. We have also use our knowledge of finding area to solve a variety of related word problems.

In English, the children have been immersed into Shakespeare, focusing on the fantastic play of A Midnight Summer Night’s Dream. This week, the children have explored the setting and have written their own detailed descriptions, using a range of exciting vocabulary.

It has been a challenging term, but the children with the support of their families, have been brilliant! They have adapted and settled back into school life with real enthusiasm. We are looking forward to sharing the summer term together as a class, with lots of exciting experiences planned. But for now, enjoy a well earned rest over the holiday and we wish you all a peaceful, safe and Holy Easter.

Holy Week Begins…

Palm Sunday (March 28th) commemorates the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It therefore marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent. In class we have discussed the events of Holy Week and the importance of this time of year in the Church calendar.

Our Learning this week…

In Maths, we have started to explore the concept of finding the area of a shape. We have used a variety of techniques to explore how to find the area of rectilinear shapes including counting squares and using multiples.

In English, the children have been immersed into Shakespeare, focusing on the fantastic play of A Midnight Summer Night’s Dream. This week, we have explored the characters through drama and role play. The children enjoyed creating their own characters and have started to write their own detailed character descriptions.

In RE, we have been finding out more about the events of Holy Week, this week we have explored the Trial of Jesus.

Pope Francis announced the beginning of the Year of St. Joseph on 8th December 2020, which will run until 8th December 2021 . Today is also the Feast of St. Joseph, an opportunity to reflect on the the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph being declared patron of the universal church.

This week, being Shakespeare week, we have begun to explore A Midsummer Night's Dream which will be our English focus for the next few weeks. Eventually we will perform a small section to share with the RSC who will then combine our section with other schools across the country to create a larger performance. So watch this space in June for the final performance piece!

We were privileged to watch a hi-tech exploration of the play live from the RSC. I have included a link to an article in the Guardian which reviews the performance for you to read if you are interested.
However, it was a unanimous vote that we much prefer to see the real actors!

Ducklings in School!! …

Thank you to Year 5 for sharing this video with us of their ducklings that they currently have in their classroom. The ducklings are named after characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream voted by the children.

Good Afternoon,

It has been a lovely week, welcoming all the class back into school and hearing everyone’s news. The children have settled back into school life brilliantly and they have all enjoyed seeing each other again.

Our Learning this week…

In Maths, we have been continuing to explore multiplication and division. We have been practicing a range of methods to use in division, including the place value chart method and the part whole method. The children have had the opportunity to discuss their preferred strategies and use this within a variety of contexts.

In English, the children have been planning and preparing their newspaper reports around the theme of lockdown. Next week, we will be producing our final drafts and collating as a class record for our own time capsule.

In RE, we have been finding out more about the events of Holy Week, this week we have explored the Last Supper, and in our research we have understood the links to the pass over meal. The children have created their own drawings of the seder plate, explaining some of the symbolism within the Jewish faith.

Good afternoon ‘Team Year 4’

Well we wanted to start by saying a massive well done and thank-you for all your hard work over the past term, it has been an honour and at times quite humbling to see the incredible effort you have all made in your home learning. We fully appreciate how difficult it has been and we continue to feel so proud of each of you. It was great to see mostly everyone on the google meet on Thursday, and we are very excited to welcome you all back to school on Monday. We have some exciting lessons planned for the week!

RETURN TO SCHOOL…

ALL children will be welcomed back to school on Monday 8th March. Drop off and pick up times will be the same as before for all of Year 4. 8.40am drop off at Common Edge Rd gates, and 3.15pm pick up from the same place. On Fridays, pickup will still be at 1.05pm for all of the class. Our PE days will still be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Miss Haggerty has but a detailed blog up on the News page, with more in-depth information about our return to school and the safety measures that will be in place-it is important that you read this before the children’s return. Click here to read this.

Also, please remember to bring in your whiterose maths booklet, the RE booklet and your ‘Blackpool Future Story’ as we will be continuing these in class over the next couple of weeks.

World Book Day..

During the past week, we have been busy with a variety of world book day activities and it was lovely to see all your outfits on Thursday, we really had a range of characters from Horrid Henry, to Harry Potter, thank you so much for your effort on making this day memorable.

After our google meet, the children have been working hard on their ‘Blackpool Future’ stories. Please remember to bring your story into class on Monday morning, as we will be sharing these and editing them before we produce our neat copies. We can’t wait to give out our ‘Special’ pencil cases!!

Also, don’t forget the ‘book mark’ competition. Please look on the google drive for the link to this, and again please bring these in on Monday so we can enter them into the competition.

This week’s Learning…

Another brilliant week of learning both in school and for our home learners! In maths we have been focusing on multiplying and dividing, using a range of written methods. In Literacy, we have been working hard to understand the key features of journalistic writing, this will be great preparation for our own writing next week in school when we will be putting together our own class ‘time capsule’ of our own experiences during lockdown. In Science, we are beginning to understand the three different states of matter and in RE we have been exploring the events of Holy week in more detail, considering the meaning of some of the key messages for Christians.

Good afternoon Year 4

As we begin our journey through Lent and with the Prime Minister’s announcement this week, it is with hope that we look forward to the lighter days of spring. We are delighted that we will all be back together as a class, from Monday 8th March, it is going to be great to see all of you and catch up on all your news!

WORLD BOOK DAY …

On Thursday it is World Book Day and we are asking children who are in school to dress as their favourite book character and if you’re at home, we would still like you to get involved and send us your photos. If you prefer, you could dress up a teddy/toy as your favourite book character - we can’t wait to see your photos!

This week’s Learning…

Another fantastic response for this week’s learning both in school and for our home learners! In maths we have been focusing on multiplication and finding factors of numbers. In Literacy, we have been working hard to understand the key features of journalistic writing, this will be great preparation for our own writing. In Science, we are beginning to understand the three different states of matter and in RE we have been imagining what it must have been like to have been in the crowd on Palm Sunday as Jesus rode by.

Good Afternoon Year 4!

We just wanted to start by saying a massive ‘well done’ to all of you, for your fantastic efforts this term with the remote learning. It has been great to see how well the children have been supported in their learning at home and we want to say thank you to each of you, as we journey through this difficult time together.

To allow everyone a well earned rest (parents included!) , we won’t be setting any home learning tasks next week during the Half term break. We have attached some optional activities which you may want to share in preparation for the beginning of Lent next week.

NEXT HALF TERM…

The home learning packs for next half term will be delivered to you shortly. We have included the ‘Whiterose’ Maths work book and the ‘Talk for Writing’ unit ‘The Truth about Mountain Ogres’. You will also find an activity pack for our RE topic. Please see the weekly time table on Google Drive for 22.2.21, which will outline when activities should be completed.

Ash Wednesday and Lent…

Lent is a special time in the Church’s calendar that takes place each spring in the run up to Easter. It begins Ash Wednesday, (17th February 2021)

Lent lasts for 40 days and ends the day before Easter Sunday, on Holy Saturday.

It is a solemn time when Christians remember how Jesus spent 40 days and nights alone in the desert, being tempted by the Devil. Jesus used this time to prepare for His work by fasting (going without food) and praying to God. You can read about this in Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13.
