'They gave out of their wealth but she, out of her poverty, put in everything - all she had to live on.' Mark 12:44

Good afternoon everyone,

This week we heard about the importance of giving and doing some without showing off. We heard about how rich men came to the temple to give money; they gave a large amount but this was only a small percentage of what they possessed; they sought out praise and adoration from others. However, a poor widow only gave 2 coins, yet this was everything she owned.

Jesus asks us to be more like the poor widow: to give humbly and lovingly. In class we have been thinking about what we can give that is more important than money: our time, our attention, our love, our care. We have been trying to put this into practice.

English - This week we have been exploring our new book The Night Gardener by the Fan Brothers. We have been creating descriptive sentences, exploring vocabulary and writing poems to compare the settings at the beginning and end of the story.

Maths - We have focused on addition and subtraction. We have been particularly looking at what happens when we add ones which cross tens (e.g. 36 + 8 will cross the 40 number). We have been developing written and mental methods to support us.

Science - We explored and explained the importance of exercise for our physical and mental health and how being active helps and changes our bodies and minds.

RE - We learned about the Annunciation of Jesus to Mary. We discussed what God asked of Mary and how she showed her faith and trust in God. We also explored links between the story and our prayers and also why we think Mary may have been chosen.

History - We learned about school in the 1900s and answered questions about what school was like in the 1900s in role as children from the time.

PE - Our indoor PE sessions focused upon bouncing a ball skills and our outdoor PE focused on kicking a ball.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home today. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.

As always, please continue to read. This is the most important way you can support your child!

Spelling

A new set of common exception words. All groups have 10 words this week as we feel it is important for all children to know their common exception words.

There is also a handwriting sheet.

Reading

A reading comprehension on the importance of healthy eating.

Maths

Adding ones by reaching a multiple of ten and then adding the rest on.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

Monday 18th November - Wild Animals VR experience in school. We ask parents for a small contribution towards this experience which can be paid over parent pay. For further information, please see this flyer.

Friday 29th November - KS1 movie night 4.30-6.15 in the school hall. Tickets available via parent pay at £2.50. Children to come in PJs and they can bring a teddy or blanket/pillow. Snack and drink included.

Friday 6th December - Christmas Fair. 3.30-5.30. More details to follow on this.

10.12.24 Year 1 and 2 Nativity! There will be two performances at 9.30am and 2pm. (Keep an eye out for any slight time changes.) Each child will be sent two tickets for each performance. These are free but we have to limit numbers as it is for two classes and we can only physically fit so many people safely in the hall at once. Many thanks for your understanding.
