'Lent is a new beginning...' - Pope Francis

Good afternoon everyone,

We have been talking this week about the forgiveness of sins and how we must all repent and ask for forgiveness, as we all make mistakes. It is important that the children recognise we all make mistakes, but that these can be put right through saying sorry, meaning it and trying to be better.

Year 2 have been making their Lenten promises this week and are trying to be better - this is the challenge we have set ourselves and I hope that you can see this in your own child. We are working to give to others (time, love, friendship), make better choices (give up unhealthy foods, choosing new hobbies, etc) and praying (the Our Father, the Hail Mary, the Glory Be). We will continue to refer back to our promises throughout Lent.

On Wednesday, we attended church for the Ash Wednesday Mass. We discussed the meaning and purpose of the cross on our forehead and how this marks the beginning of Lent.

English - In English we have been focusing on instructions. We have explored the language of instructions, used bossy verbs and written our own instructions for how to make a sandwich.

Maths - In Maths we continue our work on multiplication by looking at and solving problems involving the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Science - In Science we continue to explore habitats and focused upon rainforest habitats.

RE - In RE, we have been learning about Lent. We have explored symbols and their meaning and have written our own Lenten promises.

History - We learned about the first aeroplane flight and why it is historically significant.

PE - Our Wednesday PE foucsed upon overarm throwing. Our Friday PE focused upon jumping and travelling on equipment.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. Please continue to use TTRockstars to practise times tables.

Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.

Times Table

We will revisit our 3 times tables as many of us are not yet confident with these.

Please keep practicing. Keep going on TTRockstars!

Maths

10 times table worksheet.

Reading

Practice SATS paper.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

Thursday 6th March - World Book Day. We are inviting all of the children to come to school on this day dressed as a book character and to bring their favourite book to share. (Please make sure these are clearly named with your child’s name)

Monday 10th - Friday 15th March - Science Week - We have lots of exciting visits and activities planned for this.

Monday 17th March - Parents Day - chance for us to catch up and discuss your child’s learning at the midpoint of Year 1. Please ensure you make an appointment.

We had a lovely World Book Day on Thursday. We wore our fantastic costumes and did lots of great activities involving books, such as creating book marks, writing about our characters and going on a book scavanger hunt.
