'The earth is filled with tabernacles - praise Him!' - St Luigi Guanella

Good afternoon everyone,

Last Sunday saw us celebrate all the special women in our lives for Mothers Day. This falls on what is called Laetare Sunday - a small break in the middle of Lent where we can enjoy ourselves before going back to our ‘act, pray, give’ focuses.

This week’s worships have focused on the ‘presence’ of God in our lives and the above quote summarises that perfectly. A tabernacle is the place in church where Jesus is but we can make ourselves a tabernacle - a place where Jesus can live in us through our actions. We have been thinking about how we can carry out these actions.

English - This week we have explored, spelt and used the suffixes -er (for nouns), -ness and -ment. This can be tricky but we have been very impressed by how well the children have done this. We have also learned about and identified the key features of a diary and have analysed our example text to think about the writer’s choices. Finally, we looked at how we can describe character’s emotions by showing, not telling and how this helps our readers.

Maths - In Maths we learned more about multiplication. We used arrays to solve problems and also solved problems involving the 2 and 5 times tables, including multistep problems.

Science - No Science this week due to our Palm Liturgy practice.

RE - In RE, we learned about the offertory and consecration as important parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist and holy communion. We made links between scripture and the actions we take during these events.

Geography - We had a brief geography lesson due to practice!

PE - Our Wednesday PE was a dancing lesson due to weather! Our Friday PE focused on striking and fielding.

Computing - We continued to type up our science reports.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.

Times Tables

Dividing by 5 facts linked to the 5 times table.

Reading

Wildlife reading comprehension.

Maths

Multiplication word problems.

Golden Award - Marlaya - for being a polite, well-mannered and understanding member of class.

Writing Award - Natan - for his increased effort and focus in written tasks.

Maths Award - William - for increased concentration and self-belief.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

Tuesday 19th March - KS1 Open Afternoon - all parents are invited to join us in class on this day anytime after 2pm to 4pm*** to see what we do in class, talk to your child and their teachers about their learning and have a look round our class. We hope you can join us! ***If you are intending to come to school after 3.10pm, please ensure your child is collected at home time as we are unable to keep any children who are not booked into after school club.

Friday 22nd March - KS1 Palm Sunday liturgy - join us in Church at 2.30pm to see KS1 retell the story of Palm Sunday. I will be sending readings and words home for Year 2 to practise. They do not need to know these off by heart and can take the words into the service with them.

Wednesday 27th March - Year 2 Lenten Reflection in church - You are very welcome to join us in church at 2.40pm for a lenten reflection being led by Father Frank. The children will be bringing their bags and coats into church so if you attend they can be picked up from church, rather than returning to school.

Those not able to attend, please be aware that, due to parent pick ups in church, we may be quite late returning to school. I advise you to check in the church building first before going to collect your child from school on this date. After school club will run as normal for those needing to attend.

Have a lovely weekend,
