'Listen to Jesus and follow Him. That is the message of the Transfiguration ' - Pope Francis

Good afternoon everyone,

This week in our liturgies we have learned about the transfiguration of Jesus. We learned how this showed again that He really was the son of God and that God wants us to listen to what He says and follow Him.

We also learned about the importance of forgiveness. We were suprised to hear that Jesus forgave those who sentenced Him to death even when He was suffering on the cross. We used this to think about our own ability to forgive and that, even though it is very difficult, forgiveness helps us to become closer to God and feel more peaceful in ourselves.

English - This week we have been writing our own ‘zoom in’ setting narrative based on an illustration from the Night Gardener. We have tried to include personification, similes, powerful verbs and expanded noun phrases to really improve our writing.

Maths - In Maths we have begun our new unit on multiplication. We learned how to identify equal groups, how to draw these to solve problems and also how multiplication is the same as repeated addition.

Science - In Science we we wrote our non-chronological reports about our chosen world habitat.

RE - In RE, we have been learning about important objects in church and how they relate to the sacraments. We identified the altar, sanctuary light, tabernacle and crucifix amongst others. We then went across to church to spot all these different artefacts.

Geography - We learned three different ways that islands can be formed and wrote briefs explanations of how this happens.

PE - Our Wednesday PE session focused on striking and fielding skills as we learned football rounders.. Our Friday session saw us begin our gymnastics unit.

Computing - We began to apply our word processing skills to type up our science reports.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.

Times Tables

Please practise learning the 3 times table. Practise this both ways, e.g. knowing that 5 x 3 = 15 is the same as 3 x 5 = 15. There is also a counting in 3s worksheet.

Writing

There is a handwriting practise booklet.

Maths

Multiplication with the ‘x’ sign and with repeat addition.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

Thursday 7th March - World Book Day. We are inviting all of the children to come to school on this day dressed as a book character and to bring their favourite book to share. (Please make sure these are clearly named with your child’s name)

Friday 15th March - Brian House Own Clothes Day - we are inviting the children to come to school in their own clothes on this day and for parents to donate to our chosen charity. (PLEASE NOTE as it is a Friday Year 2 will have PE on this day - so remember suitable footwear.)

Tuesday 19th March - KS1 Open Afternoon - all parents are invited to join us in class on this day anytime after 2pm to 4pm*** to see what we do in class, talk to your child and their teachers about their learning and have a look round our class. We hope you can join us! ***If you are intending to come to school after 3.10pm, please ensure your child is collected at home time as we are unable to keep any children who are not booked into after school club.

Friday 22nd March - KS1 Palm Sunday liturgy - join us in Church at 2.30pm to see KS1 retell the story of Palm Sunday. I will be sending readings and words home for Year 2 to practise. They do not need to know these off by heart and can take the words into the service with them.
