'Upon this rock I will build my church.' - Matthew 16:13-19

Good afternoon everyone,

Our worship this week has focused upon how we are all part of God’s family and how this family spreads throughout the world. We learned how Jesus has many different titles and that, just like we can have different roles in our families - brothers/sisters, sons/daughters, cousins, etc - Jesus means different things to different people. We might appreciate his sacrifice as the Lamb of God or how he guides us as the Good Shepherd. We can all have a personal relationship with Jesus.

We also heard how Jesus chose Peter’s name (which means ‘rock’) because he knew he would be a solid foundation to begin his church. This was clearly a good choice as Peter went out into the world, telling people about Jesus in the times after Pentecost.

English - This week we completed our instructions text for an imaginary animals habitats. We worked very hard on them! We have now begun our new unit on circular narratives, using ‘Grandad’s Island’ by Benji Davies as our vehicle text. We made predictions on what might happen, created poems using expanded noun phrases and developed our question writing skills.

Maths - In Maths we finished our work on length and height and are now working on statistics. This week we made and interpreted tally charts and pictograms as ways of collecting and representing data.

Science - In Science we undertook an investigation to see which materials were most stretchy.

RE - We explored the people who work in our local, national and world-wide church and what their roles are, including Priests, Bishops, Cardinal and the Pope. We then looked in more detail at exactly what the Pope’s job is and why he is so important.

Geography - We learned all about the things someone could do if they visited Sydney. We then compared attractions in Sydney with those we have in Blackpool, identifying similarities.

PE - This week we did some activities to assess our fundamental movement skills.

Please continue to practise the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception Words - both reading and spelling!

Please practice learning the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as later this half term we will be having times table tests on these.

Other Tasks

Times Table Test

Although not strictly Year 2 knowledge. I have given the children an 11 times table test to practise. The 11 times table has a predictable pattern which should make this an easy times table to learn.

Maths

Interpreting Pictograms.

Reading

Reading comprehension about plastic.

We are very excited about our visit to Stanley Park on Tuesday 9th July. You should have received a letter on Thursday to advise you on lunch options. Please return this slip as soon as possible so we can order a lunch.

We will set off from school at about 9.30am so please arrive to school as you normally would. We aim too arrive back to school at around 2.55pm so collection should be as normal as well (traffic permitting!).

For the trip your child will need:

  • a backpack which they will need to carry.

  • A waterproof jacket - This is an outdoors trip and we will need to be prepared to be outside, even if the weather changes.

  • Sun cream - Please apply sun cream in the morning before the trip but we ask that you pack an amount in case this needs topping up.

  • A sun hat or baseball cap to protect the children from the sun.

  • Please wear normal school uniform - PE kit and comfortable trainers would be preferable!

Our wet play toys are becoming a little tattered and tired and we are in desperate need of something newer.

If you have any toys, games, figures or playsets that your child no longer uses or has outgrown that you are able to donate to us we would be incredibly grateful.

Thank you in advance!

Water bottles - This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please ensure your child brings their’s each day especially now it is hotter as we do not have any spares in class.

Earrings - please ensure these are only small gold/silver studs as stated in the uniform policy. Please also make sure earrings are removed at home before PE on Tuesday and Friday. Children wearing them will not be able to take part in PE.

Nail Varnish - please ensure any nail varnish is removed for the pupils come into class. It should not be worn at school.

In this hot weather the children should come to school wearing sun cream, have a hat with them and have their water bottle each day. Please note the message sent during the week stating that children must wear shoes, and not sandals, to school for safety reasons. Many thanks.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Hall
