'All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit!' Acts 2:4

Good afternoon everyone,

This week we have been talking about Pentecost, the birth of the Church and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We have discussed how Jesus had promised the Holy Spirit many times and the power and courage that it gave the disciples to go forth and spread the Word of the Lord. That responsibility is now ours and we have been thinking hard this week about how we can spread the message of Jesus and His love for us.

It has been lovely to see everyone celebrating today in their bright clothes. We have been to church, had tuck with key stage 2, made birthday cards for the church and played in the classroom, ahead of Pentecost Sunday on 19th May.

English - This week we have been planning and beginning to write our finding narratived based upon the Bog Baby.

Maths - In Maths we have explored unit and non-unit fractions and how these can be represented. We have also been learning how to find non-unit fractions of quantities by drawing equal groups.

Science - This week we checked on the growth progression of our seeds and bulbs. Many are now starting to grow. We also noticed that many of our beans planted without soil are also growing well!

RE - In RE, we identified and described our Christian beliefs that can be found in the story of Jesus’ Ascension. We also listened to and wrote about the story of Pentecost.

History - We thought about why Grace Darling was so famous but her father was not. We gave reasons why this might have been and explained if we thought Grace’s father should also be remembered.

PE - Our Wednesday PE focused upon sports day practice. Our Friday PE explored gymnastics, where we focused upon using equipment to aid us in balancing and jumping.

Computing - We explored Scratch jr to create an algorithm for a musical button.

Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s and the Year 1 and 2 common exception words.

Times Tables

4 times table practice. This isn’t a formal requirement of Year 2 but is very important for all our work on fractions.

Reading

Pentecost reading comprehension.

Maths

fractions of amounts.

Handwriting

-ed and -ing suffix words.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.

Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.

I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.

Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.

Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.

School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.

This week most of Year 2 completed both their Maths papers - arithmetic and reasoning.

Next week we will have two more papers - a spelling test and a punctuation and grammar paper.

Nearly there!
