This week our focus has been on the Feast of the Ascension, which we celebrate on Thursday 29th May. We have been taking a lot these last few weeks about Jesus appearing to the disciples and preparing them for the task ahead. Now that task is upon them - as it is us. We are now the vessel through which word of God will flow - and what a wonderful job the children are doing. They make me proud of them every day the way in which they strive to be good disciples of the Lord - well done Year 1.
English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!
Maths - this week we have been working on number up to 50. We have used our tens and ones to make the numbers and found them on our number grids. We have also done lots of work on tens and ones, and what each digit in a two digit number means. We have used our tens and ones to make the number, we have also drawn the number using a part part whole model to show how it can be partitioned or separated. Our key focus this week has been one more and one less than a two digit number and becoming confident users of our number grids.
Art - this week the children have continued with their printing unit this week with Miss Evans looking at how to create an image with different materials..
Science - this week we continued our new unit all about Plants by focusing on what plants needs to survive and grow strong - like us!
Topic - this week we continued our Geography unit about the four countries that make up the UK. This week we have have examined Blackpool, and focused on our addresses and what each part of it means.
Many congratulations to this week’s winners…
Golden Award - Ava for demonstrating super learning in our Science topic all about Plants
Writing Award - Louis for detailed writing all about the Ascenion and Pentecost in RE, reflecting on what these events meant for the disciples of Jesus.
Maths Award - Alistair for excellent effort, concentration and hard work shown in Maths to master finding one more and one less than a number and making it in tens and ones.
General pieces of information
PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.
Trainers - if your children is wearing trainers with laces for PE they must be able to tie them by themselves. This is a health and safety issue - please ensure your child can tie their laces before sending them in lace-up trainers.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle this week. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 1 have orange tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Miss Evans and Mrs Connolly and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Miss Evans and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it create fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bag - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS - YEAR 1 — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary

At Our Lady's we like to support our parents/carers in Online Safety matters
Keeping children and young people safe online is one of the biggest challenges facing society today and it is all of our responsibility to ensure that children are educated to make positive, informed choices when they are online.
This month’s online safety guide gives helpful advice about…
What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Violent Content Online This free guide explores the troubling rise in children’s exposure to violent online content, unpacking the emotional, behavioural and social risks – and how trusted adults can help.
We hope you find these guides informative and helpful in promoting the positive use of technology to make the online world a better and safer place for us all. Thank you.
PHONICS SCREENING - Year 1 Phonics Screening will take place the week of 9th June. (First week back after our half term holiday) Please ensure your child is is school this week as each child must complete an individual phonic assessment at some point during this week.
Thanks so much for those who were able to come to the short meeting on Tuesday - lovely to see you. Hopefully everyone received their little information pack - I would be REALLY GRATEFUL if you could take some time over the holidays to remind children of the ‘special friends’ and read some of the words from the pack. (Focusing on the split digraphs a-e, e-e, o-e etc) Two weeks is a long time for little people to have a break and then come back to their screening! A little bit of practice each day would go a long way! Many, many thanks. (See the Oxford Owl video link above for how to say the sounds.) At the bottom of the list I have added last years paper then you can see what the children are asked to do.

Extreme Reading Challenge
Continuing with our focus on reading across school, we have a challenge for the children! Reading is one of the most valuable skills we teach children, and it can be a magical adventure when we bring creativity and fun into the mix. One exciting way to encourage pupils to read is through extreme reading challenges – taking books to unusual places or reading in imaginative ways. Where is the most interesting place you have ever read a book? Whether it is up a tree or on top of a mountain, we want your photos! Your challenge is to take a photo of yourself reading somewhere extreme (but safe!) and send it to school. Please send your photos to admin@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk so we can display these in school and on our website. We can't wait to see your pictures! Thank you for your support!

May is the month of Mary. The Rosary is a meditative prayer that reflects upon the life, ministry, and death of Jesus and also on His Blessed Mother. As we repeat the familiar prayers, we allow our minds to think about the lives of Jesus and Mary here on earth – a mystery.
Fr Frank came into school on Tuesday to lead an asembly all about the Rosary which has inspired us in our prayer life.
As a school, we are always looking for ways to improve children’s engagement with reading and this last half term, more children in Year 5 have been reading regularly as part of our Lent challenge, so during the Summer term, the whole school will be taking part in a reading challenge.
Children will receive a golden ticket each time they read and get their reading diary signed three times in a week. At the end of each half term, during our celebration assembly, we will draw a golden ticket from each class’s box, and one winner from each class will receive a reward.
Please encourage your child to read regularly and bring in their signed reading diary so they can start collecting their golden tickets. Thank you for your support.
Miss Evans will start giving out golden tickets from MONDAY 28th APRIL - your child’s reading record will continue to be checked on their reading day, so their week will run from each reading day ie Tuesday to Tuesday, they they read and change their books on a Tuesday.
Our first winner was announced in assembly today and wins a book token…..
…..well done…
And finally…have a lovely half term holiday - we return to school on Monday 9th June!
