"Take up your cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24

This week we have continued to talk about Jesus and his disciples and just how much they were prepared to give up to follow me. Sometimes we all need to make a leap of faith to follow the Lord. We have talked this week about who we follow and why and what we need to do to follow Jesus.

We have also talked this week about our right to say STOP and NO is someone is doing something that we do not like. We have talked about our right to tell and that it takes courage to do the right thing and stand up for the right thing. Please contiue this conversation at home with your child. Many thanks.

English - we have continued on with our RWI lessons. During these sessions we all focus on phonics, reading, spelling and sentence development. We have also been working on our pre-cursive handwriting in which we focus on how to write our letters, starting on the line. We are continuing to work hard on our common exception words, reading them in class every day!

Maths - this week we have been learning all about 2D shapes - we have talked about their properties, we have named them and we have looked for their shape in the aces of our 3D shapes. We have also talked about where they will find these shapes in everyday life….look out for circle, squares, rectangles at home!

RE - this week has been all about Jesus being taken to the temple as a small child. We have talked about how we celebrate special events in Church with our families, just like Jesus did in the temple with His family. Although Mary was worried when Jesus was ‘lost’ Jesus asked her why she was concerned as He was with His Father.

PLEASE SEND IN A PICTURE OF YOUR CHILD’S BAPTISM, IF THEY HAVE BEEN BAPTISED, FOR OUR NEW TOPIC BOARD. MANY THANKS.

Science - this week we have continued with our topic all about Materials. This week we have focused on the properties of materials and what they feel like - are the shiny or dull, rigid or flexible.

Geography - our focus for this half term is all about maps and the various pieces of information that different maps provide. This week we looked at all the photographs we took last week on our walk around school and used them to make a plan of our school and its grounds. We made a key to show what everything was on our map.

ICT - this week we continued with our programming unit, using the Bee Bots to move according to our plan. Could we move the Bee Bot from one point to another and record its movements?

Art - This week the children continued with their Textiles unit by doing some weaving!

Congratulations to this week's winners…

Golden Award - Emilio for making a super plan of our school grounds and creating a key to go with it.

Writing Award - Fionn for super independent sentences writing in RWI and improving his pre-cursive handwriting

Maths Award - Aaliyah for super work on naming and describing the properties of 2D shapes

PE will be on Monday and Friday so please send the children into class in the PE kits on those days. No earrings can be worn for PE so please ensure that they are taken out at home.

  • Water bottles - This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day.

  • I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Veasey and Miss Sanderson and is also when the children will have Music with Miss Hope

  • Homework Expectations - please see the Homework page for what I expect the children to do at home…..don’t worry, it’s mainly just reading!! Yr1 Homework — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (squarespace.com)

  • PHONICS Support - take a look at Oxford Owl for information about how you can help your child at home with their phonics and reading. This is is a great site in general but the page linked has a super little video showing how the sounds should be pronounced. See how many sounds your child knows! How can I support my child with phonics? - Oxford Owl for Home
