The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 2022

Today, and this week, has been all about celebrating our wonderful Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!! What a wonderful time we have had. Please see the photos at the bottom of the blog and will add to these at the end of the day on Friday. Many thanks to you for sending your child dressed up for the occasion and foe donating to school through the PFTA - if you have not done this yet, you still can through your ParentPay account.

We have had a wonderful day, filled with joy and fun and also learning about our incredible Queen. I hope you and your child like the coin which has been bought by the PTFA to mark this special occasion - many thanks to them.

This week we have been learning……

English - our focus has been our RWI lessons where we concentrate on phonics, spelling, reading and writing. In class we continue to work hard on our pre-cursive handwriting, spelling of the common exception words and our independent sentence construction. We have also been working on a story called The Dragon Machine in our imaginative writing this week - I am AMAZED with the children’s work!!

Maths - this week we have focusing in on numbers up to 50, how to read them, say them, write them and show them. We have been using sticks of tens and ones to show the number along with looking at how many tens and ones are in each number.

RE - this half term our focus topic is The Resurrection’ - this week we looked at the Ascension and how the disciples reacted to Jesus leaving them and going back to be with His Father.

Science - we have continued our new Plants topic by examining wild and garden plants. We have looked at the difference between the too and even go on a Wild Plant Hunt around the school grounds!

Topic - this week has been all about the Queen and preparing for our Jubilee celebrations!!

Art - this week’s work was inspired by all the work and artists that the children have encountered this half-term a collection of activities using all the new skills they have learnt.

Very well done to all our certificate winners this week….

Golden Award - Penny for a superb retell of The Dragon Machine! Excellent use of words from the story

Writing Award - Finlay, Amara, Jacob, Austin and Macie for excellent independent writing on The Dragon Machine. (I couldn’t decide between you all!)

Maths Award - Annie for super partitioning of numbers up to 50 into tens and ones.

Please remember that the Phonics Screening Check for Year takes place the week of MONDAY 6th June. As we are now on holiday for two weeks, I would be VERY grateful if you could make sure your child reads through the RWI Set 1, and 3 sounds a few times in the holidays and particularly during that second week of holidays. The timing of this assessment is not great for Year 1 as TWO WEEKS with NO PHONICS is a long time when you are 5/6. I just want to give them the best chance possible and for some of our children a break of two weeks mean they might have forgotten some of their sounds. Many thanks.

Phonics List - set 1, 2 and 3

Things to note…

  • Children should have their water bottles each day. Water bottles must be taken home and washed daily. Children can only have plain water in their bottles, not juice or flavoured water.

  • PE is Monday and Friday

  • Earrings cannot be worn for PE

  • Nail varnish cannot be worn for school.

  • Earrings should only be small, plain, gold or silver studs

  • Children should have long hair tied back for school

  • School bags should just be the red book bags you were given in Reception

  • Please keep reading folders in the children’s school bags so that they have them on the right day - many thanks.

  • Homework Expectations for Year 1 can be found on the Homework page. Year 1 Homework Expectations - SUMMER TERM — Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School (ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk)
