Believe you can and you will.

We have had a lovely week in Year 1 - getting to know each other better, learning all about our new subjects, being good friends and trying hard to be the best we can be. The move from Reception to Year 1 is a big one, but all Mrs Veasey and I ask of the children is that they try their best - and they have certainly been doing that this week! Well done Year 1 - you have mad a great start to the new school year.

This week we have been learning…..

English - this week we started our RWI lessons, with our focus being on reading, phonics, spellings and writing. The children have been split into three groups and are being taught by either me, Mrs Veasey or Mrs Ormerod. These groups ensure your child is being taught at the right level for them and they can make the progress necessary because the books they are reading will be at their phonic level and understanding. These groups will be re-assessed constantly. Along with this we have been working on our pre-cursive handwriting, working on the letter a and also learning to read and write our Common Exception words.

Maths - this week our focus has been on grouping and giving a reason for our groups - we even managed to do some of this outside as the weather has been so nice! In our Fluent in Five (Mental Maths) we have been working on doubling, addition and subtraction of numbers under 10.

RE - this week has been all bout the Creation Story, which is our first focus this term. We have listened to the story of creation from the Bible and have started to make a story board of the days when each part of creation took place. We have also celebrated Our Lady’s birthday, The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Wednesday 8th, by watching the Mass in class and making pictures of Mary.

Science - this half term is all about Humans and Animals - we started off this week by looking at the different animal groups, mammals, birds, fish etc and grouping animals accordingly.

Topic - this half term our History topic is all about us and our our family history, so we started with our family and the people who are important to us.

PLEASE COULD I ASK YOU TO SEND IN A PICTURE OF YOUR CHILD WITH THEIR FAMILY FOR OUR TOPIC BOARD. A picture of your child with the members of your household would be lovely. Please name them and we will ensure you get them back! Many thanks.

Unfortunately Covid 19 has not gone away and we continue to have safety measures is school to ensure the safety of your child, the other children in class and the adults in school too.

  • Teachers continue to wear face masks in shared areas and visors in class

  • Children are required to wash their hands when they come in school and when they return after play - as well as before lunch.

  • Children in Year 1 have their own bag of pencils and materials to minimise the amount of sharing of equipment.

  • Books are still being put aside for 72 hours. before been given to another child if they have gone home.

  • Please can you ensure that you do not send your child to school if they are showing ANY symptoms of Covid 19 or are unwell in any way. Please take them for a test - we all have to continue to do our bit to keep everyone safe and keep the children in school. Many thanks.

If your child is isolating from school due to Covid 19 and they are well enough to work, you can find their work on the HOME LEARNING page of the Year 1 section of the website. I have using Oak Academy units as they all contain a little video and a task for the children to complete that does not require you to print anything - your child just needs a piece of paper and a pencil!! And maybe some colours for the art activities! https://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning

Please DO NOT send the work into school with your child on their return, but send photos of it through Class Dojo and add work to your child’s profile. You will each get an invite to this through the email you gave to school when your child was in Reception

And finally……any questions or queries either catch me or Mrs Veasey at the gate or email using year1@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk.

Have a lovely weekend……Mrs Hollinghurst and Mrs Veasey
