"Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth." 1 John 3:18

We have been trying the live this message this week through the way that we act and the way that we behave towards others. This is all part of own work on living like a disciple of Jesus. Year 1 have made me very proud of them this week as they have thought about their actions, as well as their words.

This week we have been learning….

English - we have continued with our letter writing unit, this week based on Dear Greenpeace - when Emily found a whale in her pond! We have written our own letters to Greenpeace to tell them what animals we have found….we have had giraffes found behind fences, dolphins living in showers and even a turtle found in a hot tub! The children have written some great letters and have remembered their full stops, capital letters, ways to start and end a letter as well as using their lovely handwriting.

Maths - we have continued with our number to 50, this week focusing on how to make the numbers with tens and ones, how many tens and ones a number contains and compared it to other numbers using greater than and less than. We have also been finding two digit numbers on a number square and been working on our number bonds to 20! We have been busy!

RE - this week we have continued with the theme of the disciples and how they felt when Jesus appeared to them. We have written some super sentences about the way the disciples must have felt and why.

Science - we continued with our work on Plants, this week focusing on garden plants. We looked at the differences between wild plants and garden plants and talked about the plants in our own gardens. The children have done some great drawings of the plants in our garden, which are growing well and some children helped Mrs Veasey to plant up some window boxes.

History - this week we made up a fact file of all that we have learnt so far about Queen Elizabeth II and made some big posters of her with our partners showing different stages of her life.

Year 1 have all worked very hard this week, but these are the children we are celebrating in particular….

Golden Award - Gabriel for demonstrating a gentle and caring nature and being a friend to all.

Writing Award - Willow for working hard in our letter writing topic to construct her own sentences, independently.

Maths Award - Nevaeh for super work on numbers up to 50 - comparing, ordering and making in tens and ones.

Thank-you so much for continuing to respect Social Distancing measures at drop off and pick up times and wearing your masks. These measures are so important to ensure everyone’s safety at school and to ensure that our Year 1 bubble remains open to all. Can I please stress the importance of the one way system at pick up time - IN on the Common Edge Road entrance and OUT down the drive onto Thornhhill Close.

Please can you also ensure that your child stands with you at drop of time in the morning and is not running around the car park and in between the parked cars. Many thanks.

Dinner Times - we have talked a lot this week about trying to speed up a little in the dining room so that all the children have a playtime. Due to Covid restrictions we have had to put into place the children across school have a shorter dinner break, with less time in the dining room and less time to play. All children still have to get through the dining room in the same amount of time, but with only two classes in at a time. This is not ideal - but this is the situation. Year 1 need to remember to eat and not chat when they go into the dining room as ALL children must remain in the hall until EVERYONE has finished, as each class has their own welfare assistant and place to play on the yard. Year 1 are not getting their playtime outside as some members of our class are taking so long to eat and other classes cannot get in as Year 1 are still there 40 minutes after they first went in! Please help to speed this progress up by encouraging your child to eat a little quicker - not trying to give their indigestion - just want them to get out to play as our afternoon is very long!!

Things to remember……

  • PE continues to be on Monday and Friday - no earrings on these days please

  • Bring your school water bottle each day

  • Reading books will be changed on your child’s reading day - we will only be able to send home a basket book each week - Guided Reading books will remain in school. We still have to quarantine books for 72 hours before they are sent home to anyone else. This limits the number of books we have to send home. Please sign your child’s reading record when they read at home.

  • Please keep your child at home if they are unwell - we must all play our part to keep the bubble safe.

  • School closes at 1.15pm for all children on Friday’s.

And finally, have a lovely weekend, stay safe…..Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins

Don’t forget it’s a…..
