'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord...' Matthew 21:9

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

Today we have listened to the story of Jesus’ triumphant return to Jerusalem and made palms to wave as we listened to the story! The children have brought these palms home with them to help them remember the story, so that, hopefully, they can share it with you too! We have focused on the joy of that day an the hope that was felt by all those who witnessed Jesus return that day. Next week we will focus of a different pat of the Holy Week story, starting on Monday with the events of the last Supper and how things changed so quickly for Jesus. Next week is a very special week for us in school. I look forward to sharing these stories with the children.

The children have all been working hard, with Mrs Veasey, to make two Stations of the Cross which will go into Church next week. I will post photos on the bold next week when they are finished.

This week we have been learning…

English -we have finished our unit of work on The Dragon machine this week and I have been amazed by the quality of wok that the children have produced. This week we have designed our own Dragon machines and written about what they would be like flying through the air. we have used ‘ed’ verbs to describe this. Today, we have written of own versions of the story and they are simple amazing! I am so proud of them all. These pieces of work will be displayed in class on our Dragon board! We have also continued our work on the Common Exception words, phonics and handwriting.

Maths - this week we have been working on our number bonds to 20 - applying our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us. The children have all done very well with this and I am impressed with their application of these skills. These are number facts that we need to know. We have also worked on using the three numbers of a part part whole diagram to write series of fact family number statements.

RE - this week our main focus has been on the story of the Good Samaritan and the acts of kindness that we could find in the story. We have listened to the story, watched the story and sequences the story!

We have also listened to the story of Palm Sunday and made palms to wave as we listened!

Science - in our topic on Seasonal change this week we looked for signs of Spring - even though it was freezing on Tuesday and the signs of spring were few and far between!! We also made paper plate butterflies to add to our Spring board.

History - this week we compared toys form the Victorian era with toys from now, focusing on two tea sets - one china and one plastic- and their similarities and differences.

Thank-you so much for continuing to respect Social Distancing measures at drop off and pick up times and wearing your masks. These measures are so important to ensure everyone’s safety at school and to ensure that our Year 1 bubble remains open to all. Can I please stress the importance of the one way system at pick up time - IN on the Common Edge Road entrance and OUT down the drive onto Thornhhill Close. Many thanks.

Things to remember……

  • PE continues to be on Monday and Friday - no earrings on these days please

  • Bring your school water bottle each day

  • Reading books will be changed on your child’s reading day - we will only be able to send home a basket book each week - Guided Reading books will remain in school. We still have to quarantine books for 72 hours before they are sent home to anyone else. This limits the number of books we have to send home. Please sign your child’s reading record when they read at home.

  • Please keep your child at home if they are unwell - we must all play our part to keep the bubble safe.

  • School closes at 1.15pm for all children on Friday’s.

And finally, the children have brought home a Science box tonight donated by the Blackpool park Rangers. Enjoy! Have a lovely weekend, stay safe…..Mrs Hollinghurst, Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
