Humility is not thinking less of yourself.......

I have been humbled this week by Year 1 and the way in which they have thought of others. Yesterday we marked Armistice day in class with a short reflection and a two minutes silence - and you could have heard a pin drop in our class. Year 1 showed great respect and maturity in the way they thought about others and we are all very proud of them. Humility is one of the key Jesuit Values we are covering in class this half term.

We have has such a good week in Year 1 - all the children are working very hard - but these are the children we have chosen to specifically celebrate this week…..

Golden Award - Florence for demonstrating a very mature attitude towards all her work and always trying her best.

Writing Award - Roma for trying really hard with her pre-cursive handwriting.

Maths Award - Jacob for super effort with using the part part whole model in his addition work.

This week we have been learning…

English - we have continued our theme of stories with repeating phrases and this week we have read ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ by Julia Donaldson. We have learnt parts of the story so that we can say it ourselves without the book; we have looked at all the rhyming words; we have written about the clothes that George gave away and we have looked at the special friends within tricky words so that we have spell them ourselves. In Phonics we have looked at ‘air’ that’s not fair and ‘ay’ may I play.

Maths - this week we have continued to look at the part part whole model and used it to write calculations, starting with either the parts or the whole. We have used this information to write a fact family. We have also used number bead strings to help with our addition work and started to look at the bar model too. Busy week!!

RE - this week we have started to think about The Annunication and what the Angel Gabriel said to Mary when he first visited her. We are doing very well with our challenge of learning the Hail Mary prayer.

Science - this week we have looked are grouping animals according to what they eat - whether they are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

Topic - this week in our Geography work we have looked at the names of the capital cities of the four countries of the UK and the seas that surround our country.

Design - we had a great lesson this week! Some of the children started their sewing with Mrs Veasey to create a sea creature; all the children painted their hands as part of our class sea themed Christmas Tree with Miss Collins (all will be relieved!) and most of us made a jellyfish sun catcher. Those that sewed this week will make their sun catcher next week. All we need know is some sun! All the children’s work is amazing and we are so proud of them all. We all love Thursday afternoons!

Work at Home - please follow the link to see our Year 1 expectations for what the children should be doing at home. http://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-homework/2020/11/13/autumn-term-expectations

SELF ISOLATING/HOME LEARNING - if your child is having to self isolate because either they or someone in your household is showing ANY symptoms of Covid 19, then please follow the following link to the NEW Home Learning page. From now on, this is where the work for the week will be posted. Please post photos of your child’s work into the Portfolio section of Class Dojo. It is only by working together to keep each other safe that we will manage to keep Year 1 and our school open. Please keep everyone safe by keeping your child at home if anyone in your household is showing symptoms: is awaiting a test or is waiting for test results. Many thanks. http://www.ourladyassumption-sch.co.uk/yr1-home-learning

Other things to mention…

SCHOOL CONTINUES TO CLOSE AT 1.15PM EVERY FRIDAY

  • Thanks for the pencils, colouring books and pens for the Shoe Boxes - Year 1 have done very well with their contributions for less fortunate children.

  • Please sign your child’s reading record each time they read so that they can collect stickers on their bookmark. We ask that children read at home a minimum of three times a week.

  • PE - Monday and Friday. We now have Music on a Wednesday with our new music teacher Miss Benson. Children CANNOT wear earrings for PE.

  • Don’t forget your child’s school water bottle each day - thanks!

  • Please do not send your child into school if they are unwell or showing any signs of Covid 19 - we need to work together to keep each other safe. Many thanks for this.

  • CHRISTMAS CARDS - it maybe a little early to mention Christmas cards - but this year more than ever it is important to note that children MUST NOT BRING CHRISTMAS CARDS INTO CLASS TO GIVE OUT TO THEIR FRIENDS/CLASSMATES.. We will not permit these to be given out due to the current situation, nor will staff give them out. If you wish, your child can bring in ONE CARD for the whole class. Many thanks.

And finally……..have a lovely weekend and thank-you for your continued support. Mrs Hollinghurst,

Mrs Veasey and Miss Collins
