This week the children have been learning all about penguins. This theme followed on well from our birds theme and the children had remembered lots of the facts they had learnt last week. I try to bring our weekly theme into all areas of our learning, from PE to RE. I find that this really engages the children and gets them excited about every subject.

We have started our challenge mountain this week which has been a big hit! Each week, there will be three challenges for the children to complete. If they complete all 3 they move to the top of the mountain and earn dojo points. All children have made it on to the mountain this week, some with a little bit of encouragement but most of them independently. This has been lovely to see and they are all becoming fantastic little learners.

Our Learning this week

Our theme this week has been penguins.

Phonics - now that we know all of our Phase 1 sounds we have started our daily reading groups with the children depending on their phonetic ability. The children have adapted to this change so well and we have seen some great work this week. These groups will continue for the rest of the year - each term the children will be reassessed and they may move groups.

Maths - we have been practicing our subitising skills and learning about number 4.

UTW - we learnt about penguins including their habitats and what they eat. We were all so surprised at what interesting animals penguins are!

EAD - the children have been doing family portraits for a competition we are hoping to enter. More details to follow!

Communication and Language - we have been learning five little speckled frogs in sign language.

RE and RHE - we have recapped the Creation story this week and we have enjoyed remembering that God made us and that he made the world for us. We made a sound story to go alongside the Creation story.

P.E. - we have been practicing our throwing and catching skills. We have also been having a go at the daily mile - this is technically 13 laps of our playground but we are not quite there yet!

Our theme next week is Scotland/The Loch Ness Monster.

Award winners

Our award winners this week are:

Golden - Esmae - for being a super learner at all times. Esmae is always ready to learn and she always aims high.

Writing - Avie - for working so hard in our RWI groups this week. Avie is really trying her best and showing great resilience.

Maths - Draya - for super independent number matching work this week. Draya really applied herself to this activity.

Congratulations!
