What a great morning we had....
The whole of Our Lady of the Assumption came together today for a poignant 2 minutes silence and special assembly to remember 11.11.11.
The school listened to a lovely assembly by Year 6 pupils who explained about the significance of the time and date and also why we wear poppies to remember the fallen and also the people who serve to protect us and others around the world.
The assembly came to an end with a member of each class bringing a poppy to the front of the hall to 'plant' in a display which we had created.
A simple, but moving way to celebrate this special day!
On Wednesday Our Lady's will begin a 'One Million Minutes' Challenge which is an exciting opportunity brought to schools by award winning education charity Achievement for All. The charity has teamed up with Peters Books & Furniture to offer the prize to the primary school class which reads the most minutes in just one week! The challenge only lasts for one week from 11th - 18th November 2015.
Children will be given special bookmarks so they can log their reading minutes at home and at school. (We will simply use our 'Reading Records' to record our minutes of reading each day) Class teachers then collate the class total each day and log it on the Million Minutes website.
All of our school has signed up for the challenge, which we hope will inspire children to read even more than they usually do throughout the whole school and increase their chances of winning! Classes can see how well they are doing and race against each other by accessing the specially designed online leaderboard known as the “Readometer”.
The class that reads for the most amount of minutes and tops the leaderboard at the end of the week, will win the exciting new reading corner packed full of books worth over £1,000, courtesy of Peters Books & Furniture.
Hopefully, if we all try really hard we may be lucky enough to win! Our children are all great at reading - and so we should be in with a good chance.
There is a letter below for parents and we will let you know how we are getting on - hopefully you can encourage your child to read even more during the course of this special week... and don't forget to record how many minutes they have read for, so it can be added to the class total!
So everyone... let's get reading!!!!
Friday 13th November will be
‘Children in Need’ Day.
On this day, Our Lady of the Assumption put out our Giant Pudsey to try to fill with generous donations of coppers. We ask the children to bring in all their spare change on this day…
Also our KS2 children will be taking part in ‘The World Record Attempt for the 'Largest Language Lesson’ that day! The children will be streamed a live lesson through the screens in class to be undertaken at the same time! For every child who takes part - £1 will be donated to Children in Need!
Live Screening at Christmas Fair 4th December 2015
This year we will be hosting a wonderful screening of our children’s amazing performances and artwork throughout the past few years…
As part of our Christmas events we have acquired funding for the making of a video which will celebrate all the children’s achievements in the arts (dance, Shakespeare etc) and this will be screened on the side of the school building on the evening of Friday 4thDecember(as in Queen’s Jubilee)
We hope families will be able to come out to our Christmas Fair on this evening and then watch this amazing performance! Please come and join us - hopefully we might have some special guests too!
E-Safety at Our Lady's
Camera mobile phones and tablets are now a part of our everyday lives - so much so that we hardly even notice them any more. However as a school we have been considering the safety to all our children from misuse of our devices. A built in digitalcamera enables users to take high quality pictures. These can then be sent instantly to other mobile phones or e-mail addresses. They can also be posted on the internet or in chat rooms. There is the potential for such images (albeit taken in innocence) to be misused.
Starting this half-term, parents and visitors if using a phone when entering school grounds, will be asked to turn their mobile phones off/put phone away when in school. Parents may take video and photographs of children at designated times - in school performances and special events etc but, so school is aware that this is your intention, we will have a book where you can sign to say that you are intending to record your child at an event.
Parents are informed that photos should be used for home and family viewing and should not be posted on social media e.g. Facebook.
We do not encourage any children to bring mobile phones into school for any reason. If you intend your child to have a mobile on them to come to/walk home from school then a form MUST be completed and children will then leave their phone at the school office to be put in the safe during the day. If a phone is brought into school without parental consent then it will be confiscated and handed directly back to parents.
School staff are also not allowed to use mobile phones whilst in the presence of children at school. Phones must be switched off and put away in a safe place during teaching hours.
We thank all of our parents for your support in this.

Christmas gifts & cards.
Parents and families of Our Lady of the Assumption overwhelm us on many occasions with your kindness in the form of gifts and cards. Whilst staff really appreciate the heartfelt message, we always feel that it would be lovely if the money you spent went back to the children rather than us! So this year we are asking that parents donate a small gift to become part of a ‘Class Hamper’ which will then be raffled before we break for Christmas. Each class will have a different theme for their hamper and will send details out over the next few weeks. We think this will be a fun way of fundraising for our school and as always appreciate your great help and support.
It's hard to believe we have almost reached the end of our first half-term - and what a busy time it has been!!!
We are still collecting items for this years Harvest Celebrations and our school will be celebrating the festival in church on Friday 16th October at 2.30pm. We hope parents can come along and join us. Our harvest gifts are being collected on Tuesday 20th October so there's still time to send in an item to give to a worthy cause.
Tuesday 20th October our PTFA will be holding a 'Non Uniform Day'. The cost of this is a donation of wine or spirits for the PTA 'Bottle Fair' at the Christmas Festival this year. The children can come in any of their favourite clothes on this day and simply bring their donated bottle with them in the morning.
PARENTS DAY...
We hope you have been able to make an appointment to speak to your child's teacher on our Parents Day on Wednesday 21st October. If you haven't, please contact the office on 762833..
During your appointment you will be able to look at and sign your child's class Acceptable Use Agreement which is our esafety focus for this term. Each class has been discussing the basic rules of safe use of ICT at home and in school. We want our children to be confident in the safe use of ICT and to be able to report any items which they know are unacceptable or make them feel uncomfortable. You can read the class/school rules here before you meet with your child's teacher.
At school on Parents Day we will have a book fair with books to browse from and buy. Please feel fee to come and have a look on the day.
Finally we would like to thank all parents for your support with all we do at school. It is always very much appreciated. We couldn't do it without you!
We wish you all a lovely half-term.
Well, what a wonderful day we have all had...
Wednesday 14th October....outfits at the ready!
