Last week...
We are now approaching half term and it has been a very busy start to the new school year. The children are all working very hard and it has been a joy to see the wonderful work going up around school demonstrating everything they have been studying.
There are several events just around the corner which we would like to draw your attention to...
We are taking individual school photographs on Thursday 8th October. (if you have a family group you can come in between 8.30am - 9am) otherwise individual photos for each class begin from 9.05am.
The PTA will be meeting to discuss future events on Thursday evening 8th October. If you think you would like to find out a little more about the work of the PTA then please come along on this evening at 6:00pm. You would be very welcome.
On Wednesday 14th October we will be dressing up for National Maths Day and will all be taking part in some terrific maths challenges. We hope parents will be able to come into class straight after school on this day to see children’s amazing maths work!
On Friday afternoon (16th October) we will hold our annual Harvest celebration. We will be completing the day with a short service led by the children at 2.30pm in church. We hope parents and families are able to join us for this!
This year we are again collecting tins etc on behalf of our local charity ‘StreetLife’. We have asked each class to bring a certain type of foodstuff. (letter given out) Yr 6 will place into boxes for collection. We have only asked the children for 1 item each, but if you do have more to spare these would be gratefully appreciated by the charity.
On Tuesday 20th October our PTA are holding an ‘Own Clothes Day’ where the charge will be to bring a bottle to school for our Christmas Event.
These dates and others are available on the dates section of the website - please check this out for anything coming up!
Finally, time slots for Parents Day (Wednesday 21st October) will be available from next week. Please see class teacher or Mrs Wilson in the office to confirm your preferred time.
Many thanks
Last week, our Shakespeare Ambassadors...
Good morning from the PTA members.
You are warmly invited to our PTA meeting on Thursday 8th October at 6 pm.
We will get together in the staff room (please use the main reception entrance) to discuss activities for the coming term (including Manchester Coach Trip & Christmas Event).
We do hope you can join us to meet our members and hear about more of the wonderful things we do at Our Lady's. If you can encourage any other parents/grandparents/friends to come along with you that would be great ... we'd love to see some new faces!
PTA Team

Year 2 - Belgium- black, yellow and red
Year 3 - Greece -blue and white
Year 4 - Italy - green, white and red
Year 5 - Spain - red and yellow
Year 6 - Germany - black, yellow and red
We hope you will all be able to celebrate with us on this important day!
Parents with a child currently in Year 6 may have already considered the secondary school choices for them as they begin their last year at primary.
A reminder however that parents with children beginning secondary school in September 2016, MUST HAVE COMPLETED THEIR APPLICATION BY 31st OCTOBER 2015.
Parents can access the brochures on the School Admissions webpage. Paper application forms will be available, but Blackpool residents should apply on-line at www.blackpool.gov.uk/schooladmissions. Note: All applications for a faith school will also be required to complete a supplementary form (these should also be available on admissions website - if not found however, look at the secondary schools own website or contact them)
NB: Families who pay their council tax to Wyre or Fylde should apply to Lancashire County Council. Forms completed on Blackpool Admissions site will not be received by Lancashire County Council.
Also, as the open evenings for secondary schools are coming up very soon, you may want to check on the school's own website for the exact date, time and exact admission arrangements of these.
For St Mary's, the general school open evening for prospective parents will be on Monday 28th September 2015 with parents from Our Lady of Assumption invited to attend the evening at 6:30 p.m. There will be tours of the College to see the new facilities, talk to our staff and students and see the students at work.
However, to help you with your decision Our Lady of Assumption and St. Mary’s are holding a joint meeting for parents on Monday 21st September 2015 starting at 6p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption. At the event there will be a series of short talks from senior staff at St. Mary’s, the opportunity to ask questions and the chance to find out in more detail some aspects of the work done by our local Catholic Academy.
We also extend an invite to those parents of children in Year 5 who may also be wishing to take their time in considering options for their children in the coming 12 months.
We look forward to seeing you in our school hall at 6pm on Monday evening - 21st September 2015.
Letter of invitation from Our Lady's & St Mary's
To all those parents and families who are considering our school for your child beginning in September 2016 - we offer a welcome invitation to our 'Open Day' on Friday 9th October at 1.30pm - 3pm.
We like to invite parents to look around our school and see it during a normal school day for our pupils. This means of course, that classes will be undertaking their normal lessons and activities for that day, so our teaching staff will be busy with their pupils. On this afternoon therefore, our Year 6 pupils will be introducing parents to our school and showing you around as part of their 'positions of responsibility'.
Our Year 6 pupils are always eager to show visitors around the school they are very proud of and will obviously be able to give you lots of information from a students perspective of their school.
Although you will be able to visit the Reception Class where your child would begin their learning journey with us if they joined Our Lady's, unfortunately you will not be able to have any discussion with the class teachers Mr Whetnall and Mrs Mahoney at that time as they will obviously be attending to their current class of 30 children during that afternoon.
We do of course understand that you may have questions for us, so if there are any questions that the Year 6 pupils have not answered on this afternoon, then you are welcome to make an appointment to speak to the Headteacher, Miss Haggerty or our SENCo, Mrs Burrows on our PARENTS MEETING DAY - Wednesday 21st October 9am - 4pm.
We apologise that we cannot make further individual arrangements to meet with prospective parents during the school day as our full time has to be given to the children in our care at the beginning of a busy school year. We do very much look forward to meeting you all however, on the afternoon of Friday 9th October or 21st October.
An official warm welcome back to everyone to our new school year.
It has been a strange start with the water issues and the slight changes to our PE uniform - but we are (almost) back on track now and excited about the year ahead.
The children have already settled in to their new classes and are working hard. We have been discussing all their hopes and dreams for everything they wish to achieve this year - I'm sure we will be hearing some wonderful things about our pupils throughout the year! Teachers have already given out 'Golden Awards' for the end of the first week and our recipients for that week were: Year 1: Maisie
Year 2: Kyle
Year 3: The whole class!!!
Year 4: Sian
Year 5: Cayden
Year 6: Reanna
We're very proud of them all and hope they sustain their efforts throughout the year! (I'm sure they will)
During this next week the children will be bringing their new books for homework and also their reading books... Please, please continue to read for pleasure with your child/children. Most of the children at Our Lady's love to pick up books or hear/construct stories of their own and we want this to continue and flourish! For our younger readers I found a lovely video link to Julia Donaldson, who gives some great tips about helping your child gain a love of reading...
Julia Donaldson's Top Tips for reading
I hope you have had a chance to look at your child's class page on the website which will show you the areas of the curriculum/topics which will be studied in each class across this year and also a separate link to your child's RE theme for this term. Also please look out for the date of your child's class information meeting over the coming two weeks.
We have our start of year mass in church tomorrow at 9.30am - which you are most welcome to join us at. Tomorrow we will ask Our Lady on the feast of her birthday to help us and guide us in the new year ahead.
I would also like to thank parents for their patience as we await the remaining stock for our outdoor PE kits - hopefully we should have these all sorted this week. The children do look great in their new hoodies!
As I said we are all looking forward to the successes and challenges coming our way in this new school year - and, as always, looking forward to working with parents to provide the very best we can here at Our Lady's!
