In April, the children in Year 5 will be invited to take part in the Bikeability training scheme. They will undertake two full days of training on  Wednesday 22nd April and Friday 24th April.

The Bikeability training scheme will involve a team of trained cyclists coming into school to teach the children how to cycle safely on the road. The first session will start with the Council’s Road Safety Team checking that all bikes are safe and roadworthy. If your child’s bike should fail the safety check then they will not be able to commence the training. The attached parent bicycle safety check sheet should help you to prepare your child’s bike. If you think the bike may not meet roadworthy standard or is not at the right size for your child, it may be better to borrow a bike from the Bikeability team.

The first part of the training will be undertaken on the playground and children will only progress to the next stage of training if they pass this initial stage. To pass they will have to show they are a competent rider and can ride their bike in a steady and safe manner. Children who do not pass this stage of the training will not progress any further but still have the opportunity to pass the initial level and receive a level one award for their efforts. Other children who do pass this initial stage will have opportunity to go on to be rewarded at further levels.

Your child will need to have a bicycle helmet and a bicycle lock. High visibility vests will be provided for the children to wear when completing the on road training part of the course. It is advised that the children bring in track suit bottoms to change into for the sessions and a pair of suitable trainers. The children will also need an appropriate coat for cold wet weather.

To prepare for this I would suggest that the children try to get out on their bikes over Easter, if we’re lucky enough to have any good weather, to ensure they are confident and have an increased chance of completing all training. If your child can ride but does not have a suitable bike and or helmet for the training, we can arrange the loan of these from the Road Safety Team. Please put a note on the bottom of the consent form if any items are needed and send into school ASAP- we have to book loans ahead of the training so they are delivered to school in time.

Please complete and return the Bikeability consent form as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday 15th April (3rd day back after Easter)- the Road Safety Team need to know in advance the number of children taking part to arrange staffing.
